A Torrington IR-182216 needle roller bearing inner ring — 1-1/8 in bore, 1-3/8 in outside diameter, 1 in width, hardened and ground. It is a component, not a complete bearing: the ring presses onto the shaft and its ground outside diameter becomes the inner raceway that the needle rollers run on.
IR – inner ring for a needle roller bearing
18 – bore, in sixteenths of an inch: 18/16 = 1-1/8 in
22 – outside diameter, in sixteenths: 22/16 = 1-3/8 in
16 – width, in sixteenths: 16/16 = 1 in
Needle roller bearings run directly on the shaft where the shaft is hardened to about 58 HRC and ground to bearing tolerance. Most shafts are neither. An inner ring solves that: it supplies the hardened, ground raceway as a separate part, so the shaft can be soft steel, stainless, or simply undersized for the needle bearing that has to fit the housing. The three dimensions each do a different job — the bore matches the shaft, the outside diameter must match the bore of the needle bearing exactly because it is the raceway, and the width matches or exceeds the roller length so the needles never run over an edge.
Bore: 1-1/8 in (28.575 mm)
Outside diameter: 1-3/8 in (34.925 mm), ground raceway
Width: 1 in (25.4 mm)
Type: needle roller bearing inner ring
Material: hardened and ground bearing steel
Sold as 6 Pcs. Six inner rings. The needle roller bearing that runs on the ring — drawn cup, machined race or cage-and-roller assembly — is not included, and no seals, retaining rings or spacers are supplied.
The ring presses onto the shaft as an interference fit, driven from the ring face with a sleeve so the ground outer surface stays unmarked. Any nick or burr on that surface becomes a defect in the raceway and will show up as noise and early roller failure. The ring is fitted square and then checked for run-out before the needle bearing goes on.
The direct equivalent is another inch-series needle bearing inner ring with the same three dimensions — 1-1/8 in bore, 1-3/8 in outside diameter, 1 in width — such as Timken IR-182216, INA IR-182216 and Koyo IR-182216, all built to the same inch IR standard. Metric IR rings are a separate dimension series and will not give the exact raceway diameter a matching needle bearing requires, so metric part numbers are not substitutes.
