What this part is

An SKF 22212 CC/C3W33 double-row spherical roller bearing measuring 60 mm bore x 110 mm outside diameter x 28 mm wide. Straight (cylindrical) bore, open, flangeless inner ring with two stamped steel cages guided by a ring centred on the inner ring, a lubrication groove and three holes through the outer ring, and C3 radial internal clearance. Spherical roller bearings carry very high radial load plus axial load in both directions, and the spherical outer raceway lets the inner-ring assembly swivel so the bearing self-aligns to shaft deflection or housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.

Decoding the designation

222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, ISO dimension series 22.
12 — bore code; 12 x 5 = 60 mm bore.
CC — SKF internal design: flangeless inner ring, a guide ring centred on the inner ring in place of a fixed central rib, and two stamped steel cages, one per roller row. SKF also writes this design CC(J) or CJ, which is why the title carries both forms.
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than normal.
W33 — circumferential lubrication groove around the outer ring outside diameter plus three radial lubrication holes through to the raceway, so the bearing can be regreased in service through the housing.
No K in the designation — straight cylindrical bore. No adapter sleeve is involved.

What these specs mean in practice

Two independent cages, one per roller row, is the useful part of the CC design. Each row can index at its own rate, so when one row is more heavily loaded than the other — which is what happens as soon as any axial load appears — neither cage is dragged by the other. Combined with a flangeless inner ring and a guide ring instead of a central rib, the full 28 mm of width goes into roller length rather than into a rib, which is where the load capacity comes from.

C3 is chosen deliberately, not as an upgrade. Extra clearance absorbs a heavy interference fit on the shaft, a large temperature difference between inner and outer ring, or thermal growth in the housing — all of which eat clearance once the machine is hot. Fitting C3 where normal clearance was specified leaves a lightly loaded bearing able to skid its rollers rather than roll them, which polishes the raceway and shortens life.

W33 only earns its keep if the housing has a matching grease feed. Line the housing port up with the outer ring groove and fresh grease is pushed straight into the centre of both roller rows — that symmetrical feed is what lengthens relubrication intervals. Feed the same bearing from the side and the groove does nothing. If your housing has no port aimed at the outer ring, a non-W33 version is the cheaper correct choice.

Self-alignment here is static, not dynamic. It accommodates a shaft that sits at a small angle to its housing or deflects under load; it is not a substitute for aligning the machine, and it does not tolerate continuous oscillating misalignment. Permissible misalignment for this envelope is 1.5°.

Fitting notes

Straight-bore spherical roller bearings mount with an interference fit on the shaft. Heat the bearing or use a hydraulic fit-up tool; drive against the inner ring only, never through the outer ring, because the outer ring can swivel and will cock the rollers. Align the housing grease port with the outer ring groove before final assembly. Keep the axial component well below the radial load: for the 22212 envelope the axial load factor e is 0.24, and above that ratio the unloaded roller row can lose contact and skid. Grease fill is typically 30–50% of free space; overpacking a spherical roller bearing is a common cause of an early temperature rise.

Interchange guidance

The 60 x 110 x 28 mm 222-series envelope is industry-standard, so a 22212 in another brand’s nomenclature fits the same seat. 22212CJ/C3W33 is carried on this listing because SKF writes the same design as CC, CC(J) and CJ — those are the same bearing, not different parts. Equivalents for a straight-bore, steel-cage, relubricatable 22212 with C3 clearance: SKF’s own current 22212 E/C3W33, FAG 22212-E1-C3, NSK 22212 CDE4C3, NTN and NTN-SNR 22212 EAW33C3, Timken 22212 EJW33C3, Koyo 22212RHW33C3, RHP 22212 EJW33C3. A version with a K suffix has a 1:12 tapered bore and needs an H312 adapter sleeve (55 mm shaft) on a cylindrical shaft. A brass-caged version carries CA in SKF nomenclature, M or MB in FAG, CAM in NSK and EM in NTN, and is the choice for shock-loaded positions. A CN or C4 version is a related size with a different clearance, not an equivalent.
