What this part is

A double row spherical roller bearing in the FAG 222xx wide dimension series, 90 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter, 40 mm width, with a straight cylindrical bore, a machined brass cage and a W33 lubrication groove and holes in the outer ring. Two rows of barrel-profile rollers run in a common hollow-ground spherical outer raceway, so the bearing self-aligns about its own centre under very heavy radial load.

Decoding the designation

In the FAG scheme 222 is the wide double row spherical roller series and the last two digits are the ISO bore code multiplied by five — 18 reads 90 mm. M is the machined brass cage. W33 is an outer ring with an annular lubrication groove and three radial feed holes, which FAG also writes as AS. The absence of a K means the bore is straight, and the absence of a clearance suffix means normal clearance, CN. The alternate designation carried on the carton uses HL, the FAG code for increased load capacity.

What these specs mean in practice

A double row spherical roller carries very high radial load and takes thrust in both axial directions, which separates it from the single row barrel rollers of the 202xx and 203xx series. The spherical outer raceway absorbs static misalignment from housing bore error and dynamic misalignment from shaft deflection under load, so this is the standard bearing for heavy shaft positions in conveyors, fans, crushers, screens, mill drives and gearbox output shafts. The 222 wide section gives the higher radial rating available in this envelope.

Cage and clearance

A machined brass cage handles high temperature, shock and vibration and holds its form under sustained load, where a polyamide cage is limited to roughly 120 °C. Normal clearance is the standard specification: a C3 version, with greater running clearance, is the choice where the shaft fit is tight or the inner ring runs considerably hotter than the housing, and is a different article number.

Relubrication

The outer ring groove and three radial holes let grease or oil arriving through the housing port reach the rollers directly rather than migrating in from the ring faces, which matters in dirty or high-duty service. The groove and holes are aligned with the housing lubrication port on assembly.

Interchange guidance

The 22218 base number and the 90 x 160 x 40 envelope are ISO standard, so the same size is served as SKF 22218W33, NSK 22218EAE4 and NTN 22218D1, each carrying its own internal design code and rating — match the rating rather than the letter. A 22218K is the tapered-bore version, mounting on an H2318 adapter sleeve, so it is a related size and not a substitution. A version without the groove and holes is a different article number.
