An SKF 7210 CTC/C78 G1 single-row angular contact ball bearing, 50 mm bore, 90 mm outside diameter, 20 mm width, straight bore, open on both faces. The inner and outer raceways are offset so the ball load line runs at an angle to the radial plane, letting the bearing carry a radial load together with a thrust load in one direction.

Decoding the designation

The leading 72 is the ISO medium angular contact dimension series and 10 is the bore code, giving 50 mm. C is the 15° contact angle in the SKF scheme, which is why the part also carries the cross-designation 7210C. What a 15 degree contact angle buys

A 15° angle sets the ball load line close to the radial plane. That keeps centrifugal ball loading and cage stress low at speed, so a 15° bearing runs faster and cooler than a 25° or 40° bearing of the same size, and it develops less preload for a given axial interference. The cost is axial capacity: a 40° bearing of this envelope carries substantially more thrust. On paired spindle and pump mountings the 15° reading is the high-speed, light-thrust choice.

Fitting notes

An angular contact bearing takes thrust in one direction only, so the wide face of the outer ring is the thrust-taking face and its orientation on the shaft fixes the direction of axial support. Mounting force is applied to the ring being fitted, inner ring onto the shaft or outer ring into the housing, so no load crosses the ball row. A single angular contact bearing needs an opposing axial reaction, from a second bearing or a shoulder, to be held in contact.

7210CTCC78G1, 7210-CTC-C78-G1 and 7210 CTC C78 G1 are the same designation written three ways. Same-envelope 15° bearings in other schemes are FAG 7210-B-TVP-C in its 15° execution, NSK 7210C, Fafnir 2MM210WI and RHP 7210CT, all 50 x 90 x 20 mm. A 7210 BE at 40° or a 7210 ACD at 25° is a related size and not a substitution: changing the contact angle changes the axial rating, the preload developed in a pair and the speed limit.
