| Compatible With Replaces | Related size, not a drop-in: 22209K / 22209-E1-K / 22209 EK are the tapered-bore (1:12) versions of the same envelope and need an H309 adapter sleeve. 22209 in Normal (CN) or C4 clearance is the same bearing at a different internal clearance. |
| Additional Attributes | Straight cylindrical bore. Non-separable assembly. Self-aligning, accommodates static and dynamic shaft-to-housing misalignment. Polyamide cage gives low friction and quiet running but caps continuous service at approximately 120 °C. Requires a housing lubrication port aligned with the outer-ring groove to use the W33 feature. |

A double-row spherical roller bearing, 45 mm bore x 85 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide, in the ISO 222 dimension series. Two rows of barrel rollers share one spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That self-aligning action lets the bearing absorb shaft deflection and housing misalignment that would destroy a cylindrical roller or deep groove ball bearing in the same envelope, while still carrying very heavy radial load and thrust in both directions.
222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, dimension series 22.
09 — bore code for a 45 mm bore.
E — Schaeffler’s increased-capacity internal design, using longer symmetrical barrel rollers and no rigid central rib on the inner ring. The current code for this design family is E1.
S — annular lubrication groove around the outer ring plus lubrication holes through it. This is FAG’s own code for the feature everyone else writes as W33, which is why both forms appear on this listing.
TVPB — one-piece moulded window cage in glass-fibre reinforced polyamide, guided on the inner ring.
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than Normal.
The cage is the defining feature and the thing to check against your duty. A glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage is light, quiet, low-friction and very forgiving of momentary lubricant starvation, because the polymer itself has some dry-running tolerance. The trade-off is temperature: continuous service is limited to roughly 120 °C, against about 200 °C for a pressed steel or machined brass cage. That ceiling is a real one and it is the reason to specify or avoid this variant — polyamide ages and embrittles above it, and aggressive EP additive packages and some synthetic oils accelerate that at elevated temperature. If the housing runs hot, if the machine gets steam-cleaned, or if the duty is heavy shock, choose a steel or brass cage instead.
The bore is straight and cylindrical. There is no K in the designation, so this bearing mounts directly on the shaft seat and needs no adapter sleeve, unlike the 22209K tapered-bore variants which cannot be fitted to a plain shaft without an H309 sleeve.
C3 clearance sits looser than Normal when cold so that working clearance survives the inner ring growing from a tight shaft fit and from operating heat. Fit it where shaft interference is heavy or the bearing runs warm. Putting Normal clearance into a C3 duty lets the bearing preload itself and overheat; putting C3 where the machine needs tight shaft location costs running accuracy and adds noise. Clearance is a fit decision, not a grade, and mismatching it fails in both directions.
The outer-ring groove and three feed holes let grease or oil go straight into the roller rows through the housing rather than migrating in from the ends. On a bearing that will be relubricated in service this is the feature that determines how long it lasts, and it needs a housing with a lubrication port aligned to the groove.
Schaeffler publishes the following for the current-production 22209-E1-XL that occupies this envelope and internal design family:
Basic dynamic load rating C: 104 kN
Basic static load rating C0: 99 kN
Fatigue limit load Cu: 12.7 kN
Limiting speed: 10 100 rpm
Reference speed: 5 600 rpm
Mass: approximately 0.59 kg
With a polyamide cage the practical limit on this bearing is thermal rather than kinematic: the 120 °C continuous cage temperature will be reached long before the speed figures above become the constraint.
Sold as 1 Pc. One complete bearing: inner ring with both roller rows and the polyamide cage, plus the outer ring. Spherical roller bearings are a non-separable assembly, so there is no separate cup, cone or ring to source. The straight bore means no sleeve, locknut or lockwasher is needed or included.
Mount on the inner ring and never drive through the rollers or the cage — a polyamide cage will not survive being hammered. Heat the bearing to about 80 – 100 °C above the shaft in an induction heater or a clean oil bath; keep induction heating short and do not exceed about 120 °C, because the cage sets the ceiling here, not the steel. Seat the outer ring squarely and let it find its own alignment before the assembly is pulled down. Align the housing lubrication port with the outer-ring groove and purge the groove with grease before the first run.
Dimensionally equivalent straight-bore 22209 bearings include FAG 22209-E1-XL, SKF 22209 E, NSK 22209EAE4, NTN 22209EAW33 and 22209EAD1, NTN-SNR 22209EAW33, Timken 22209EJW33, RHP 22209HLW33 and Nachi 22209EXW33. Nearly all of those ship with a pressed steel or brass cage rather than polyamide, so they are dimensional interchanges that raise the temperature ceiling — usually an upgrade, but worth knowing if the machine was specified for a low-friction polymer cage. Note that on SKF and Schaeffler the modern E and E1 designs carry the lubrication groove and holes as standard with no suffix, while SKF W alone means those features are absent. Any 22209K is the tapered-bore version: same envelope, different mounting, a related size rather than a substitute.
