An FAG 22218-HL-AS-K-W33 double-row spherical roller bearing. Bore 90 mm on a 1:12 taper, outside diameter 160 mm, width 40 mm, open on both faces, steel rolling elements running on two rows of barrel-profile spherical rollers between a common spherical outer raceway.

Decoding the designation

22218 is the ISO base number in the 222 dimension series — the wide double-row spherical roller family. HL marks the FAG increased-capacity execution. AS is a lubrication groove with radial feed holes machined into the outer ring. W33 is the same provision expressed in ISO form — an annular groove plus three radial holes. K is the 1:12 tapered bore.

What these specs mean in practice

A double-row spherical roller carries very high radial load and takes thrust in both directions. The spherical outer raceway lets the inner ring and roller assembly swivel, so shaft deflection and housing misalignment of roughly two degrees are absorbed without edge loading. The groove-and-holes feature allows grease or oil to be fed to the roller sets through the housing while the bearing is running, which is what makes this design usual on conveyor pulleys, crushers, fans and mill shafts.

Tapered bore and adapter sleeve

The 1:12 bore seats either on a tapered shaft journal or on a withdrawal or adapter sleeve. For a 90 mm bore code 18 in this series the matching adapter sleeve is an H2318, whose cylindrical shaft seat is 80 mm, used with a KM 18 locknut and an MB 18 lockwasher. Supplied without adapter sleeve H2318.

Fitting notes

Drive-up on a taper sets internal clearance, so the mounted radial clearance is a function of how far the ring is pressed up the taper rather than of the bearing alone. The residual clearance is measured with a feeler gauge across the unloaded roller row before the locknut is finally secured. The outer-ring feed holes are aligned with the housing lubrication port on assembly.

Interchange guidance

SKF 22218 EK and NSK 22218 EAKE4 are the same-envelope tapered-bore, groove-and-hole executions and are direct interchanges. A straight-bore 22218 EK or 22218 W33 is a related size, not a substitute — the bore geometry differs and it mounts without a sleeve.
