Product Description

What this part is

A Timken 414 tapered roller bearing cup — the outer race on its own — from the 416/414 single–row tapered roller bearing, in Timken Class 3 precision. Outside diameter 3.4843 in (88.501 mm), nominally 3–1/2 in, and 7/8 in (22.225 mm) wide. Sold as 1 Pc.

Quantity and configuration

One cup per order — 1 Pc. This is the cup only: a hardened, ground steel outer race. There are no rollers, no cage and no inner ring in the box. The mating cone for this cup is the 416, which has a 1.5748 in (40 mm) bore; together they make a bearing measuring 1.5748 x 3.4843 x 1.0625 in overall. Buy the cup on its own when the housing race is worn or spun and the cone is still serviceable, or when you are pressing a fresh cup into a new housing.

Decoding the designation

414 — the industry–standard cup number for this size. The digits are shared across brands, so a 414 from any maker is the same race.
−3, marked on the ring as *3 — the Timken tolerance class. Timken taper races run in classes 4 (standard), 2, 3, 0 and 00 in ascending order of precision, so a Class 3 cup is held to tighter outside diameter, width and runout tolerance than a standard one. It mounts in a standard housing bore with no changes.
416 — the mating cone number. Cone and cup numbers pair by roller and raceway geometry, which is why they are always quoted together.

What these specs mean in practice

A tapered roller bearing is deliberately a two–piece bearing, and that is a maintenance advantage rather than a nuisance. The cup presses into the housing and the cone presses onto the shaft, so the two components can be replaced independently and the running clearance is set at assembly by an adjusting nut rather than being built in. It also means a cup is a genuine spare part in its own right: on a housing that has spun a race, a new cup restores the position without touching the shaft.

Class 3 precision earns its keep where shaft position matters — a gear mesh, a pinion setting, a machine spindle. Tighter outside–diameter and runout tolerance on the cup means less of the setting is guesswork and the roller path stays truer under load.

Published ratings and mounting data

Cup outside diameter 3.4843 in / 88.501 mm (nominal 3–1/2 in).
Cup width 0.875 in / 22.225 mm.
Mating cone 416, bore 1.5748 in / 40 mm.
Assembled 416/414 bearing: 1.5748 x 3.4843 x 1.0625 in overall.
Timken tolerance Class 3.
Load ratings apply to the complete cone–plus–cup assembly; a cup on its own carries no independent rating.

Fitting notes

Press the cup squarely and fully home against its housing shoulder, using a driver that bears on the cup’s back face rather than the raceway. A cup that goes in cocked is the single most common reason a rebuilt taper bearing runs hot, and it will not correct itself once the bearing is loaded. Confirm the housing bore is round and to size before pressing — a bore that has already spun a race needs sleeving, not a tighter cup.

Once cone and cup are both in, rotate the shaft under light load to seat the rollers before you take your final endplay or preload reading. Unseated rollers read as clearance that is not really there.

Interchange guidance

414 is an industry–standard cup number, so Timken 414, Bower/BCA 414, Koyo 414 and NTN 4T–414 are the same race on the same envelope, and all mate with a 416 cone. The plain 414 without a class suffix is the standard–precision version — a related build on the same envelope, dimensionally interchangeable but held to looser tolerances than this Class 3 part. One trap worth knowing: the Timken 412 is also a cup, not a cone, so it is a different race in the same numbering block rather than the mate for this one. Do not pair a 414 cup with a cone from another number family; the pairing is what sets the contact geometry.
