A FAG 22209 double–row spherical roller bearing, 45 mm bore x 85 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide, straight cylindrical bore, with a machined brass cage and extra–loose C4 internal clearance. Two rows of symmetrical barrel rollers share one concave outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set swivel bodily inside the outer ring. The bearing takes heavy radial load and axial load in both directions while absorbing shaft deflection and housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.
222 — ISO dimension series for the wide, high–capacity double–row spherical roller family.
09 — bore size code, 45 mm bore.
EA — FAG reinforced high–capacity internal design, the variant paired with the machined cage.
S — lubricating groove and three lubricating holes in the outer ring. This is the FAG code for the feature other makers call W33, which is why the carton designation is also written 22209–EAS–M–C4–W33.
M — one–piece machined brass cage.
C4 — radial internal clearance greater than C3, which is itself greater than normal.
C4 is a deliberate choice, not a loose bearing. It exists for shafts that get hot or take a heavy interference fit — think fan and blower drives, dryer rolls, kiln and furnace fans, hot pumps. The inner ring grows more than the outer ring in service and swallows the extra cold clearance; by running temperature the bearing has landed on sensible operating clearance. Drop a C4 bearing into a cool, lightly–fitted position designed for normal clearance and you get noise, vibration and a shaft that floats. Drop a normal–clearance bearing into a C4 position and it can preload itself solid as it heats and fail in short order. Match the clearance class that came out.
The machined brass cage is the reason this variant survives duty a pressed–steel or polyamide cage will not: it takes shock and vibration, tolerates high temperature without the ~120 °C ceiling that limits polyamide, and is not fussy about marginal lubrication. It also weighs more and costs more, which is why it is specified rather than defaulted to.
The S lubrication feature only pays off if the housing is plumbed for it. The groove around the outer ring and its three radial holes deliver grease or oil from the outside diameter straight into the rollers, so a housing with a relubrication fitting feeds the bearing where it matters.
Bore 45 mm, outside diameter 85 mm, width 23 mm.
Two rows of symmetrical spherical (barrel) rollers, one–piece machined brass cage.
Straight cylindrical bore. Open, no seals or shields.
Radial internal clearance C4 — greater than C3.
Lubrication groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring.
Envelope reference capacity for the 22209 reinforced design: FAG 22209–E1–XL, dynamic 104 kN, static 99 kN, limiting speed 10 100 rpm; SKF 22209 E, dynamic 102 kN, static 98 kN, limiting speed 10 000 rpm. A machined brass cage sits at or slightly above these figures; FAG does not publish a separate table for this legacy code, so use them as the envelope reference.
Approximate mass 0.6 kg.
One bearing per order — 1 Pc. A complete non–separable bearing ships: outer ring, both roller rows, cage and inner ring. No adapter sleeve, lock nut or housing is included. None is required, because the bore is cylindrical rather than tapered.
Press on the ring that carries the interference fit and never through the rollers — a brass cage will take abuse but the raceways will not. The bearing self–aligns, so slight out–of–square in the housing bore is tolerated, but the outer ring still needs full–width support or the roller ends edge–load. On a C4 position, check the shaft and housing fits before blaming the bearing for running warm: extra–loose clearance and a slack shaft fit together will let the inner ring creep.
The 45 x 85 x 23 spherical roller envelope is common to every major maker, so SKF 22209 E, FAG 22209–E1–XL, NSK 22209EAE4, NTN 22209EAD1, Nachi 22209EXW33, Koyo 22209RHRW33 and Timken 22209EJW33 all fit the same seat. Two things have to match beyond the size: clearance class and cage. C4 is not C3 and neither is normal. A brass–cage bearing swapped for a pressed–steel or polyamide one changes the temperature and shock capability even when the number looks close. Same–envelope parts with a different clearance or cage code are related sizes, not equivalents.
