Product Description

What this part is

An Eltako MFZ12DDX-UC digital multifunction time relay — a single-module DIN-rail timer whose function and delay are keyed in through push-buttons rather than set with a rotary dial. The LC display shows the selected function, the set time, the remaining time and the current contact state, so a running sequence can be read off the front of the panel.

Correcting the source data

This is a multifunction time relay, not a safety relay. It has no dual-channel redundant contact structure, no cross-fault monitoring and no functional-safety rating, so it must not be substituted for a safety relay in an emergency-stop, guard-door or light-curtain circuit. What it does is timing: delays, pulses and cyclic functions for lighting, ventilation, gate and signalling control.

Decoding the designation

MFZ – Eltako multifunction time relay (Multifunktions-Zeitrelais)12 – series 12 modular device, 1 module wideDD – digitally adjustable with a digital display, as opposed to the dial-set MFZ12DXX – DX technology: zero-crossing switching at 230 V AC to reduce contact wearUC – universal control voltage, works on AC or DC

What these specs mean in practice

Three things make this relay worth the panel space. The 18 functions cover on-delay, off-delay, pulse generation, cyclic (flasher) operation and time-limited enable in one part number, so one device replaces a shelf of single-function timers — and the display means the next person to open the panel can see which function is actually set. The universal 12 to 230 V UC control input means it does not care whether the trigger is a 24 V DC PLC output or a 230 V AC contact. And the bistable relay with zero-crossing switching keeps standby loss to about 0.4 W even at 100% duty and cuts contact erosion on lamp loads, which is where mechanical timers die first.

Quantity and configuration

Sold as 1 piece — the relay only. No enclosure, terminal cover or programming accessory is included; none is needed, since the device is configured entirely from its own buttons.

Installation and setup notes

Select the function first, then the time — on this family the time range available depends on which function is active. The remaining-time readout is the fastest way to prove commissioning without waiting out a long cycle. Because the relay is bistable, the contact holds its state without a continuously energised coil, so do not infer the output state from whether the control input is live; read the display. On DC control, observe polarity at the control terminals.

Interchange guidance

MFZ12DDX-UC and MFZ12DX-UC are different devices: the DX is set with a rotary selector and has no display, so it cannot be commissioned or diagnosed the same way even where the timing function matches. MFZ12NP is the version without DX zero-crossing switching. MFZ12DBT-UC adds Bluetooth setting from a phone. MFZ61DX is the flush-mounting series-61 relay for a back box rather than a DIN rail, so it is not a panel substitute. Within the series-12 range the module width and terminal layout are consistent, which is what makes swaps physically easy and specification mistakes easy too — confirm the suffix, not just the family.
