The Fanuc A02B-0098-B501 backplane motherboard from a Series 0-C (Zero Model C) CNC control. It is the structural and electrical foundation of the control cage: the master PCB screws onto this backplate, and every peripheral card in the control — at minimum a power supply, a memory PCB, an axis PCB and an I/O PCB — then plugs into the master through it.
It is a passive backplane assembly, not a CPU board and not a processor card. There is no processor, no memory and no I/O function of its own.
A02B – Fanuc prefix for CNC control units and their major assemblies, including operator panels, control cages and backplanes. It sits above the board-level A16B and A20B prefixes: an A02B number describes an assembly.0098 – the control model group. A02B-0098 is the Fanuc Series 0-C (Zero Model C) family, which covers the 0-TC turning, 0-MC milling and 0-TF variants.B501 – the specific assembly within that model group; the B-prefixed numbers in this range are the backplane / motherboard assemblies. The sibling A02B-0098-B511 is the corresponding backplane for another 0-C build.
Because the backplane defines the slot arrangement of the cage, it has to match the master PCB and card set the control was built with. A Series 0-C backplane will not accept Series 0-A or 0-B cards, nor anything from the later Series 16/18 or i-series generations — those use entirely different cage numbering. Check the number stamped on the backplate you are replacing, and count the slots against the card set you intend to fit.
The other practical point: a backplane is the one part of a Fanuc control that carries no data and no software. Nothing here needs programming. But equally, nothing here will make a control run on its own.
Backplane only. This listing does not include the master PCB, the power supply unit, the memory PCB or memory cartridge, the axis control PCB, the I/O PCB, the graphics or option cards, the SRAM backup battery, the control cabinet or cage sheet metal, the CRT or LCD display, the operator panel or MDI keyboard, servo or spindle amplifiers, ribbon or flat cables, connector or terminal-block kits, mounting screws and standoffs, or any software, parameters or documentation. This is not a donor unit or a populated cage — it is the bare backplane.
Sold as 1 piece — one backplane motherboard assembly. New old stock, in an opened box.
Power down and lock out the control, and allow the power supply to bleed down before working in the cage. Photograph the position of every card and every cable landing before you strip the old backplane — slot order matters and is not always obvious once the cards are out. Check the backplane connectors carefully for bent or recessed pins before fitting cards; a single displaced pin on a backplane produces intermittent faults that look like a failing card. Torque the standoffs evenly so the master PCB sits flat.
Searchable equivalents of the same part number: A02B-0098-B501, A02B0098B501, A02B 0098 B501. Related but not interchangeable: A02B-0098-B511, which is a different backplane build in the same 0-C family, and the A20B-2000-0170 / A20B-2000-0175 master boards, which are the boards that mount onto a 0-C backplane rather than substitutes for one.
