Product Description

What this part is

A FAG 51116 single-direction grooved thrust ball bearing, 80 mm bore, 105 mm outside diameter, 19 mm overall height. The bearing is three separable pieces: a shaft washer with an 80 mm bore, a housing washer with a 105 mm outside diameter, and a ball-and-cage assembly between them. Both washers carry a ground groove that the balls run in, which is what distinguishes the grooved-raceway type from a flat-race thrust washer bearing.

Decoding the designation

511 is the ISO dimension series for the single-direction grooved thrust ball bearing with flat-back washers, and 16 is the bore code, giving 80 mm at five millimetres per unit. No cage suffix appears, which means the pressed steel cage. No tolerance suffix appears, which means normal class, P0. No U suffix, so the housing washer is flat-backed rather than sphered for a seating washer.

What these specs mean in practice

The ground groove raises the contact area over a flat race, so a grooved thrust ball bearing carries substantially more axial load than a flat-race equivalent of the same diameter and runs at higher speed. It takes load in one axial direction only and carries no radial load at all, so the shaft needs a separate radial bearing. A single-direction thrust bearing also needs a minimum axial load in service to keep the balls rolling rather than sliding, which is why it is normally installed against a spring or a positive thrust source.

Quantity and configuration

1 Pc, comprising one shaft washer, one housing washer and one ball-and-cage assembly. Single direction. No seals, no shields and no seating washer.

Fitting notes

The shaft washer goes against the rotating member and the housing washer against the stationary abutment, both bearing on flat faces square to the shaft axis within the machining tolerance for the class. Because the three pieces are separable, the assembly is built up in place rather than pressed as a unit. The flat-backed housing washer requires a seat that is already square; where the seat is out of square, the 51116-U sphered variant paired with a seating washer is the design path.

Interchange guidance

The ISO base number is 51116, so another maker’s 51116 single-direction grooved thrust ball bearing is a genuine interchange on all three pieces. The 52116 is a related size, not a substitution: it is the double-direction assembly and takes thrust both ways with a centre washer. The 51216 shares the 80 mm bore but is the heavier 512 series with a larger outside diameter and height, and 51117 is the next bore up at 85 mm.
