A Timken single cup for imperial tapered roller service, cup number 76520. The cup is the outer race of a tapered roller bearing: a hardened steel ring carrying one internal tapered raceway. Outside diameter is 14 in and cup width is 1-13/16 in. The ring is black oxide coated.
Black oxide is a conversion coating a few microns thick that leaves the raceway geometry unchanged. Its working benefit is surface chemistry rather than dimension: the porous oxide holds lubricant against the raceway and raises resistance to adhesive wear and smearing, which is most useful during run-in and under marginal lubrication or transient loss of oil film.
A 14 in outside diameter on a 1-13/16 in width is a large, relatively shallow section, which places the part in heavy slow-speed shafting: mill stands, kiln and dryer trunnions, large gearbox output positions and crane machinery. Cup-side accuracy governs housing fit and raceway trueness once the ring is pressed home.
1 Pc. Cup only, no cone and no rollers.
The cup is pressed into the housing bore on its backface, to a light interference or line-to-line fit according to whether the outer ring rotates. A ring of this diameter is normally installed with a full-face driving plate rather than local pressure, to keep the raceway round. Bearing setting is taken after the cone is on the shaft, to the specified end play or preload.
76520 is carried across the tapered roller industry as a common cup interchange identity at the same envelope. A cup of the same number without the black oxide option is the same geometry with an untreated raceway, a related part where the coating was specified for lubrication reasons.
