What this part is

Decoding the designation

In the FAG scheme 202 identifies the single row barrel roller light dimension series, and the last two digits are the ISO bore code multiplied by five — 11 reads 55 mm. C3 is radial internal clearance greater than normal. Barrel roller bearings of the 202xx and 203xx series are a separate family from the double row spherical rollers of the 222xx and 223xx series, which share the spherical outer raceway but not the roller profile, row count or thrust behaviour.

What these specs mean in practice

One row of barrel rollers gives high radial capacity in a shallow section and tolerates shaft-to-housing misalignment. Axial capacity is not a property of the design — the barrel roller profile and spherical outer raceway present no shoulder to react thrust — so shaft location is provided elsewhere in the arrangement. At 21 mm width in a 100 mm outside diameter this is a notably narrow section for its radial rating.

Internal clearance

C3 clearance is greater than normal. Extra running clearance absorbs the loss of clearance that comes from an interference fit on the shaft and from a temperature difference between inner and outer rings, which is why C3 is specified where the inner ring runs hotter than the housing or where the shaft fit is tight.

Interchange guidance

Other makers’ 20211 barrel roller bearings in the same clearance class are the interchange. A 22211 shares the 55 mm bore but is a double row spherical roller, wider, with thrust capability in both directions and a different rating, so it is a related size rather than a substitution. Clearance class is part of the specification: a 20211 at normal clearance is not the same part.
