A SealMaster SL14 insert ball bearing with a 7/8 in bore. This is the bearing insert on its own: the ball bearing cartridge that drops into a pillow block, flange bracket or take-up frame. In the SealMaster numbering the trailing 14 is the bore code in sixteenths of an inch, so 14/16 gives the 7/8 in shaft size.
SL – SealMaster insert bearing series prefix
14 – bore code in sixteenths of an inch: 14/16 = 7/8 in shaft
Mounted bearing units wear out at the bearing long before the casting does. Replacing the insert alone returns the unit to service at a fraction of the cost of a complete assembly and keeps the existing bolt pattern, centre height and shaft alignment untouched — which matters most on a machine where the frame was drilled to suit the original housing. Because the insert carries the shaft, the bore size and the locking arrangement are what have to match; the housing simply holds it.
Bore / shaft size: 7/8 in (22.225 mm)
SealMaster bore code: 14
Type: insert ball bearing
Rolling elements: balls
Sold as 3 Pcs. Three bearing inserts. No housing, pillow block, flange bracket, take-up frame or mounting hardware is included, and no separate locking collar is supplied.
The insert seats in the housing bore and the shaft passes through the inner ring, which is then locked to the shaft. On a rebuild the housing bore is cleaned and inspected for wear before the new insert goes in, since a worn or scored bore lets the insert creep and defeats the repair. The shaft seat is cleaned to bare metal so the inner ring locking arrangement grips.
An interchange has to match the bore, the outer ring form and the locking arrangement of the housing it goes into. SealMaster 7/8 in bore inserts in adjacent series — ER-14, 2-014 and the inserts used in the NP-14 and SRP-14 pillow blocks — share the 7/8 in shaft size, and are the family to compare against. Bore size alone is not sufficient: a cylindrical-OD insert will not sit correctly in a housing bored for a spherical OD, and vice versa.
