An NTN JELPL-1.1/8 mounted ball bearing unit — a two-bolt cast iron pillow block for a 1-1/8 inch shaft, in the low centre height housing. The insert is a narrow inner ring ball bearing locked to the shaft by an eccentric collar, and it seats spherically in the housing so the unit takes up moderate misalignment at installation.
JEL = NTN narrow inner ring insert with eccentric locking collar. PL = pillow block, cast housing, low centre height. 1.1/8 = 1-1/8 inch shaft diameter. So this is a two-bolt base housing that mounts below the shaft, not a flange.
First, PL is the low centre height housing. The high-base version of the same insert is JELP, and its shaft centre sits noticeably higher above the mounting surface — for reference, at 1 inch bore the JELP centre height is 1-7/16 in against 1-5/16 in for the JELPL. Swapping one for the other shifts your shaft line, so measure the block you are replacing.
Second, JEL is a narrow inner ring insert, not the wide inner ring used by NTN’s UC and UEL families. The inner ring does not extend the same distance on the collar side, so it is not a straight substitute for a UCP or UELP insert of the same bore even where the housing looks similar.
Housing style: 2-bolt pillow block, cast iron, low centre heightBore / shaft size: 1-1/8 in (28.58 mm)Insert: narrow inner ring ball bearing, spherical outer raceLocking method: eccentric locking collarSelf-aligning: yesRolling elements: ball · number of rows: 1Design units: inch
An eccentric collar cams tight in one direction of rotation. It grips a plain, unmachined shaft without indenting it, which suits cold-drawn shafting and quick field changes, but it can walk loose on a drive that reverses hard under load — use a setscrew or adapter-locked insert there instead.
Self-alignment covers initial angular error between the shaft and the mounting surface. It does not excuse a bent shaft or a springy frame; get the base flat and let the spherical seat handle the rest.
Sold as 1 pc — one complete unit, cast iron housing with the insert and its eccentric collar fitted. Mounting bolts are not included.
Bolt to a clean, flat, rigid surface and shim rather than pulling the base onto a high spot. Position the collar, turn it in the direction of shaft rotation until it cams tight, then tighten its setscrew onto the collar, not the shaft. Turn the shaft by hand and confirm the insert still swivels before final tightening.
Two-bolt pillow blocks at 1-1/8 in bore also come from SealMaster (MP/NP), Link-Belt (P3U/PB), Dodge (P2B) and Browning (VF), but bolt centre-to-centre and centre height vary by maker — measure both against your frame first. Related, not interchangeable: NTN JELP-1.1/8 is the same insert in the high-base housing, and UCPL-1.1/8 or UELPL-1.1/8 use a wide inner ring insert in a low-base housing.
