This listing is the cast iron pillow block housing, split cap and base, plus a bagged set of seals. It is not a mounted bearing unit. There is no bearing in it and no adapter sleeve with it. The photographs show the bore empty and machined bare.

To make a working bearing position you also need:

A 22215K adapter-mounted spherical roller bearing (the K denotes the tapered 1:12 bore that the sleeve drives into).An SNW-15 adapter sleeve in your shaft size — SNW-15 x 2-7/16 or SNW-15 x 2-1/2 — with its lock nut and lock washer.

Buying a housing when you needed a bearing assembly is the single most common and most expensive mistake in this product category.

Correcting the source data

The previous listing was wrong on three counts and each has been fixed.

It is not a flange mount. It is a split pillow block with a two-bolt base — a horizontal foot-mounted housing that bolts to a flat surface, with the shaft passing through parallel to the mounting face. A flange mount bolts to a vertical face with the shaft passing perpendicular through it. The two are not remotely interchangeable, and the photographs plainly show a footed pillow block.The part number was scrambled. Dodge PN 042106 is catalogued as H2S-SFXT-515 in the SAF-XT line. The string HS2SFXT515 that appears on the carton label and in the ERP is the same element set with characters transposed, and it has been propagated by distributors’ legacy ERP fields — Motion’s own manufacturer description reads literally “HSG ONLY 042106” against the scrambled form. We are stating the correct designation and keeping the carton form as a cross-reference, because the carton form is what buyers will actually search.Housing scope was misstated. The distributor data files this as a housing only, which is correct for PN 042106: the catalogue item carries no bearing and no adapter. This particular lot happens to also include a bagged seal set (Dodge 043542), which we have listed above as a physical inclusion rather than as part of the catalogue part number. Seals for a SAF-XT are normally a separately ordered kit.

Decoding the designation

H — Housing.S — Split. The housing separates into cap and base so the bearing and adapter can be assembled onto the shaft in place, without sliding the shaft out of the machine. That is the reason split blocks exist and why they dominate long line-shaft, conveyor and fan installations.SFXT — Split Frame XT, identifying the SAF-XT series. The cap of this housing is cast SAF-XT 515.515 — the SAF / SN housing series number. It is not a shaft size in sixteenths, which is the usual misreading. Series 515 is the housing envelope that takes the 22215K bearing and the SNW-15 adapter family, which is what puts it on a 2-7/16 in or 2-1/2 in shaft. The carton label confirms it: SIZE 2-7/16 – 2-1/2.There is no separate FXT element in Dodge nomenclature. That fragment is an artifact of the transposed string.On the numeric digit: the sibling part 042109 is catalogued H4S-SFXT-515, the same size housing in a different cap-bolt configuration, which suggests the digit tracks cap bolts. The housing as photographed has four cap bolts and a two-bolt base. Where the decode and the physical part disagree, trust the photographs.

What these specs mean in practice

The base-to-bore centreline height of 3-1/4 in is the dimension that decides whether the housing will work at all in an existing installation. Swap in a housing with a different centre height and the shaft no longer lines up with the coupling, sprocket or pulley at the other end, and you are shimming or re-machining a base plate. Together with the 9-1/2 in bolt centre-to-centre spacing, those two figures are what make the SAF-XT dimensionally interchangeable with legacy SAF pillow blocks — you can replace an old SAF housing with the XT equivalent without touching the base plate or drilling new holes. That interchangeability is the point of the series.

The housing has no load rating of its own, and any figure you see quoted belongs to the bearing that goes inside it. Rate the position on the 22215K, not on the casting. What the housing does contribute is stiffness and alignment: a rigid cast iron block holds the bearing outer ring round under load, and a bore that stays round is what lets a spherical roller bearing actually accommodate the shaft misalignment it was designed to accommodate.

The adapter-sleeve mounting is worth understanding before you order. A 22215K has a tapered bore; the SNW adapter sleeve is driven up into it with a lock nut, which expands the inner ring onto a plain straight shaft and grips it by interference. That means you do not need a shouldered, stepped or precision-ground shaft — a length of plain shafting works. It also means the lock nut torque is what sets the bearing’s internal clearance, so an over-tightened adapter destroys the bearing’s clearance and then the bearing.

Ductile versus grey iron is not specified in the published data, and seal type for the housing is not published either — SAF-XT housings accept the series seal kits, which are normally ordered separately. The seal set physically included in this lot is Dodge 043542.

Fitting notes

Mount the block on a flat, machined or shimmed surface. A pillow block bolted down onto a warped or unmachined base plate distorts as the bolts are pulled up, the bore goes out of round, and the bearing inside is preloaded by the housing itself. This is a routine cause of bearings that run hot from the first hour.

Keep the cap and base together as a matched pair. The bore is machined with the cap bolted in place, so cap and base are line-bored as one and are not interchangeable with those of another housing, even the same part number. Never swap caps between blocks, and refit the cap in its original orientation.

Only one bearing position on a shaft should be held; the others must float. On a two-block shaft, set one housing to hold the bearing axially and let the other allow the outer ring to move in the bore, or thermal growth of the shaft will thrust one bearing hard against its stops as the machine warms up.

Fit the seals to the housing before closing the cap, and grease through the fitting only once the bearing and adapter are assembled and the cap is torqued.

Dodge mechanical power transmission products originated in Mishawaka, Indiana.
