What this part is

A factory-matched pair of super-precision angular contact ball bearings from SNFA’s spindle bearing range. Each bearing is 12 mm bore × 24 mm outside diameter × 6 mm wide, so the pair stacks to 12 mm of shaft length. They belong to the 719 E series — SNFA’s VEB family — which is the extra-light, thin-section series used where radial space is tight and speed is the priority: small grinding spindles, high-frequency electro-spindles, dental and instrument spindles, precision indexing heads and metrology equipment. The two rings are ground as a set to give a specific light preload when clamped back-to-back.

Decoding the designation

The carton is printed VEB12 7CE1 DDL. Read against SKF’s published designation tables for the SNFA legacy range, which list the SNFA codes alongside their current SKF equivalents:

VEB – the SNFA series code for the 719 .. E bearing series. Its sister series VEX covers 70 .. E. This is a documented equivalence, not an inference: SKF publishes the series as “719 .. E (VEB)”.
12 – the bore diameter in millimetres. SNFA numbers this family by actual bore rather than by an ISO bore code, so VEB12 is a 12 mm bore, which in ISO terms is the 71901 size, 12 × 24 × 6 mm.
CE – the E design designation. SNFA’s CE is its own series and design code and is only read here from SKF/SNFA literature, never from general industry convention, where the same two letters mean different things across brands.
1 – the contact angle code. SNFA/SKF publish three: code 1 = 15° (SKF suffix CE), code 2 = 18° (FE, available on request), code 3 = 25° (ACE). So the trailing 1 in 7CE1 makes this a 15° bearing.
DD – a matched set of two bearings arranged back-to-back. SKF’s published equivalent suffix is DB. The companion codes are FF (face-to-face, SKF DF) and T (tandem, SKF DT). The number of individual bearings in a set is specified by this code, which is why DD means two.
L – light preload. SNFA’s L corresponds to SKF preload class A; SKF states explicitly that for symmetrical arrangements preload class A equals preload class L, which is why a suffix like DBL does not exist in the SKF scheme. The heavier classes are B and C.
DEF STAN 80-34 – also printed on the carton, alongside a 15-12-00 code. These are reproduced here as they appear on the box. No published definition has been applied to either, so neither is decoded on this page.

Correcting the source data

The part number was previously listed as VB12-7CE1DDL. The carton reads VEB12. The missing E matters, because VEB is the series code that identifies the 719 E family; “VB” is not a series in the published SNFA range. The designation has been corrected to VEB12 7CE1 DDL, and VB12-7CE1DDL is kept as a cross-reference so the old number still finds this page.
The cross-reference 7901-C-P4 carried on the original listing is dimensionally right for a 12 × 24 × 6 mm 15° super-precision bearing, but it describes a single bearing. This listing is a set of two. It is retained as an interchange reference, not as a description of what is supplied.
The previous description was generic eBay boilerplate — a contact-us call to action pointing at a dead motorcycle-parts store link, plus shipping promises — wrapped in around forty nested font tags. None of it described the bearing. It has been removed.
This is a super-precision spindle bearing and is deliberately not categorised or described as an automotive part.

Quantity and configuration — read this before you buy:
What is here is two bearings, and those two bearings are one matched pair. The photographs show exactly two bearings in a single sealed wrap with one carton and one instruction leaflet. The DDL suffix itself specifies a set of two, so “2 Pcs” on the original listing counts the two individual bearings inside that one set — it does not mean two sets, and it does not mean four bearings.

This matters more than usual on a matched set. The two rings have been ground together so that clamping them back-to-back produces a specific light preload with no shims or custom spacers. Their bores and outside diameters are also matched to within a third of the permitted diameter tolerance, which is what gives the even load distribution a matched set is bought for. Split the pair and you lose all of that: the two halves become ordinary single bearings that will not reliably preload correctly against anything else. So this pair should stay together, and it should be bought as a pair.

Note also that these are a matched set, not universally matchable bearings. Universally matchable bearings carry the suffix G in the SKF scheme, or U in the SNFA scheme, and can be mounted in any order or arrangement. A DD set cannot — it is ground specifically for the back-to-back arrangement, and the bearings must be mounted in that arrangement and in the correct order.

What these specs mean in practice

The 15° contact angle is the shallowest of the three offered in this range. A shallow angle favours speed and radial stiffness and gives up axial load capacity; the 25° option reverses that trade. For a bearing this small, running in the sort of high-frequency spindle it was designed for, 15° is the usual choice because heat generation and speed capability dominate the selection.

Light preload works the same way. Preload exists to stop the balls skidding at speed, which is what destroys raceways in a lightly loaded high-speed spindle, but it costs speed and generates heat. For a 12 mm bore bearing in the 719 CE series, SNFA/SKF publish the axial preload of a back-to-back matched pair at preload class A (light) as 11 N, against 34 N for class B and 68 N for class C. Those are small numbers by design — this is a precision bearing, not a load-carrying one, and the point of the light class is minimum friction and minimum heat.

A back-to-back arrangement, which is what DD gives you, sets the load lines diverging toward the bearing axis. That produces a relatively rigid arrangement which can carry tilting moments as well as axial load in either direction, though only one bearing of the pair takes thrust in each direction. Face-to-face would be less rigid against tilting; tandem would share thrust in one direction only.

Basic dynamic and static load ratings and limiting speeds are not published on this page. The figures available for this size come only from distributor mirrors and they disagree with each other, including on which bearing design they describe. Rather than publish a number that cannot be attributed to SNFA or SKF directly, the cells are left empty. If you need certified ratings for a calculation, request them against the SKF 71901 CE/P4ADBA equivalent.

Fitting notes

Mount the two bearings back-to-back, in the arrangement and order they were ground for. Do not reverse one to make a face-to-face pair — the preload will be wrong.
These bearings are matched as a set. Do not mix one of them with a bearing from another set, and do not interchange bearings between sets.
Do not mount them immediately adjacent to each other unless the designation calls for it — single bearings from this series, even though ring widths are held to very tight tolerances, are not suitable for direct adjacent mounting. A matched DD set is.
Preload can be altered by grinding spacer rings, but the direction matters: to increase preload in a back-to-back arrangement the inner spacer is reduced; to increase it in a face-to-face arrangement the outer spacer is reduced. Getting this backwards reduces preload instead of raising it.
Preload figures assume mounting with zero interference on a steel shaft and in a thick-walled steel or cast iron housing. Interference fits, speed, temperature gradients across the rings and mismatched thermal expansion between shaft, housing and bearing steel all change the mounted preload from the tabulated value.
At 12 mm bore this is a small, thin bearing. Ring section is minimal, so shaft and housing form errors transfer almost directly into the raceway and a press-fit done carelessly will scrap the set.

Interchange guidance

The current SKF designation for this exact configuration is 71901 CE/P4ADBA — 71901 for the 12 × 24 × 6 mm 719 series size, CE for the 15° E design, P4A for the precision class, DB for the back-to-back set of two, and A for the light preload class. The single-bearing equivalent is 71901 CE/P4A, and the universally matchable single is 71901 CEGA/P4A. In FAG/Schaeffler terms the same envelope is the B71901-C-T-P4S family, where a UL suffix denotes the universally ground light-preload single rather than a matched pair.

SNFA is now part of SKF, which is why SKF’s own super-precision literature carries the SNFA designations in parentheses beside its current numbering. That is the obsolescence trail to follow for this part: SNFA to SKF. SNFA-marked stock of this designation is legacy inventory and is no longer produced under the SNFA name.

When substituting, match four things and not just the size: contact angle code, preload class, the arrangement code, and whether the replacement is a matched set or a universally matchable single. A 71901 CE/P4A single is not a substitute for this pair, and a DBB or DBC set is the same bearing at a heavier preload — which in a high-speed spindle is not a harmless upgrade.
