Product Description

What this part is

A Barden super-precision angular contact ball bearing, 80 mm bore × 125 mm outside diameter × 22 mm width, 15° contact angle, ground as a universal duplex pair at light preload. Barden built its reputation on instrument and high-speed spindle bearings and is now part of Schaeffler, alongside FAG and INA.

Decoding the designation

116 — Barden’s own series and size code, resolving to an 80 mm bore in a 125 mm outside diameter, 22 mm wide envelope at a 15° contact angle.
H — angular contact design with a relieved outer ring, non-separable, fitted with a one-piece machined porous phenolic cage (Barden’s Synthane XX).
D — universal duplex pair. Faces are ground so the two bearings can be mounted back-to-back, face-to-face or in tandem and the specified preload results from simply clamping them together.
L — light preload.

Why the porous phenolic cage matters

This is the specification worth paying for and the one distributors almost never list. A porous phenolic cage is vacuum-impregnated with oil, so the cage itself acts as a lubricant reservoir and feeds the ball tracks slowly over a long period. In practice that means far greater tolerance of marginal or intermittent lubrication than a steel or brass cage offers, quieter running because the cage damps ball-passage excitation, and very high achievable dN values. It is the reason Barden H-type bearings turn up in instrument spindles, gyros, and machine tool spindles where relubrication is difficult.

The limit is temperature. Phenolic is not a high-temperature material and the impregnating oil bakes out if the bearing is run hot, so this is the wrong cage for a hot-running or high-ambient position. Confirm the operating temperature before specifying it as a replacement for a steel-caged bearing.

What a 15° angle plus light preload means in practice:
15° biases the bearing toward radial load and speed rather than thrust: cooler running at a given rpm, better radial running accuracy, higher limiting speed, and less axial stiffness than a 25° or 30° bearing. Light preload continues in the same direction — the lowest heat generation and highest speed capability of the preload classes, at the cost of rigidity. Together they describe a bearing selected for speed and accuracy rather than stiffness. Preload is ground into the faces and cannot be altered at assembly.

Published ratings and mounting data

Load ratings, limiting speed and ball complement are not published for the 116HDL designation. Schaeffler has migrated Barden’s catalogue to FAG-format designations and the legacy 100-series H tables are no longer issued, so no manufacturer figures exist against this number.

For reference only, and explicitly not as this bearing’s specification: Schaeffler does publish data for B7016C.T.P4S, the ISO-format bearing occupying the identical 80 × 125 × 22 envelope at 15°, at 25 balls, Cr 63.0 kN and Cor 58.5 kN. Those are that designation’s numbers. They are offered here as an order-of-magnitude sanity check for a rough selection, not as certified data for the 116HDL, because the internal design and ball complement of a legacy Barden H-type are not guaranteed to match the current FAG part. Do not use them in a bearing life calculation for this item.

Quantity and configuration

The DL suffix describes a matched universal duplex pair, so the designation itself refers to two bearings ground as a set. Surplus duplex stock is frequently split, leaving one bearing in a carton still marked DL, and no pair-count claim is published here. Confirm the physical piece count before ordering if a complete matched set is required.

Fitting notes

Keep the set together and align the etched face marks as ground — interchanging rings between sets destroys the preload. Observe thrust direction; the relieved outer ring identifies the unloaded side. Because the cage is oil-impregnated, avoid aggressive solvent flushing, which strips the reservoir the cage is there to provide.

Interchange guidance

The ISO envelope equivalent is 7016C, confirmed against Barden’s own catalogue listing of B7016C.T.P4S at 80 × 125 × 22. In world-number format the same envelope and angle is 2MM9116WI in the Fafnir/Timken scheme and 7016C-T-P4S generally. Note that this is envelope and angle equivalence only — a plain 7016C is not a drop-in for a universal light-preload pair with a porous phenolic cage, and substituting one loses both the matched preload and the cage’s lubrication reservoir. Barden bearings are now supplied through Schaeffler.
