A Fanuc α (alpha) series spindle amplifier module, model designation SPMC-5.5. It is the power and control stage for a CNC machine tool’s main spindle, not for a feed axis: it takes DC from a shared DC link and delivers three-phase variable-frequency output to a Fanuc AC spindle motor, running spindle orientation, rigid tapping and constant-surface-speed control under command from the CNC’s spindle control. Rated output is 6.8 kW at 230 V with 27 A rated current, from a DC link of 283 to 325 V DC.
A06B is Fanuc’s drive and amplifier ordering prefix. 6082 is the α series spindle amplifier module group — the group number is what separates spindle hardware from the servo groups such as A06B-6079, A06B-6089 and A06B-6096, and it is the field most often misread when a spindle module is catalogued as a servo drive. H206 fixes the frame and rating, here SPMC-5.5. The #H512 block after the hash is a Fanuc specification or option variant of that same module; sibling numbers #H510 and #H511 are the same SPMC-5.5 amplifier at other option levels. The C in SPMC marks the cost-reduced C-series spindle module, and 5.5 is the nominal kW class, with 6.8 kW the rated figure.
An SPM is not a stand-alone drive and has no mains rectifier of its own. The 283 to 325 V DC it requires arrives over DC link bus bars from a separate Fanuc Power Supply Module, which is the unit that connects to the three-phase supply and handles regeneration back to the line. In a typical α series cabinet the power supply module, this spindle module and one or more servo modules stand side by side sharing that link. Bench operation without a power supply module is not possible, and the power supply module’s capacity has to cover the spindle’s demand alongside the axes.
Spindle amplifier sizing is a duty question rather than a peak one. The 6.8 kW rated figure is the continuous capability; short-term overload for acceleration and for heavy cuts is available above it, and a spindle that spends its life accelerating and braking a heavy chuck works the amplifier harder than one holding steady speed at the same power. The 27 A rated current is the figure to match against the spindle motor’s nameplate rather than against the machine’s stated horsepower, since gearing and duty rating sit between the two.
1 Pc. Spindle amplifier module only. No power supply module, no DC link bus bars or links, no spindle motor, no motor power cable, no spindle sensor or position coder cable, no serial spindle command cable, no fan unit spare and no mains reactor.
The module mounts in the drive cabinet alongside the power supply module and any servo modules and connects to the DC link with bus bar links sized to the module width. Spindle parameters in the CNC identify the amplifier and the motor together, so an amplifier change is followed by a check of the spindle parameter set rather than treated as a purely mechanical swap. This module class is normally applied with Fanuc αC series spindle motors under late 0-MD and 0-TD controls and 16i, 18i and 21i Model A generation controls.
The other #H51x option variants of A06B-6082-H206 are the same SPMC-5.5 amplifier and the closest substitution. Other H-codes within A06B-6082 change the kW and current rating and are not interchangeable, since the rating fixes which spindle motor the module can drive. Amplifiers in the A06B-6079, A06B-6089 and A06B-6096 groups are servo modules for feed axes and will not run a spindle. The αi generation spindle amplifiers are a later platform requiring different power supply modules, cabling and CNC parameters together.
