An SNFA VEX high-speed machine tool spindle bearing, 25 mm bore × 47 mm outside diameter × 12 mm width, 15° contact angle, built to ABEC 9 precision with silicon-nitride ceramic balls and a phenolic cage guided on the outer ring. SNFA was the French high-speed spindle specialist and is now part of SKF; the VEX range remains a reference product for spindles running above two million ndm.
The /NS in the designation means the balls are silicon nitride rather than steel, and it is by far the most valuable fact about this bearing — it was absent from the previous listing entirely.
Ceramic balls are roughly 40 per cent the density of steel, so centrifugal loading on the cage and the outer raceway falls away sharply at speed, which is what raises the usable rpm ceiling. They are harder and stiffer than steel, so contact deflection is lower and spindle stiffness is higher for the same preload. They conduct heat poorly and expand less, so the bearing is far less prone to preload runaway as it warms. And because silicon nitride and steel are dissimilar materials, adhesive wear and micro-welding under marginal lubrication are largely eliminated — a hybrid bearing survives lubrication interruptions that would destroy an all-steel bearing. Hybrids are also the standard answer to electrical pitting on motorised spindles, since ceramic balls do not conduct.
The practical consequence: a hybrid bearing is not interchangeable with its all-steel equivalent in either direction. It costs considerably more, and substituting steel for ceramic in a spindle designed around a hybrid gives up the speed and thermal margin the design depends on.
SNFA’s code reads as series, dimension series, bore, special features, precision, cage material and location, contact angle, pairing, preload:
VE — high-speed spindle bearing form; X — ISO 10 dimension series, that is the 70xx envelope.
25 — bore in millimetres.
/NS — silicon-nitride ceramic balls, hybrid construction.
9 — precision class ABEC 9. SNFA uses 5, 7 and 9 for ABEC 5, 7 and 9.
C — cage material phenolic resin. E — cage located externally, guided on the outer ring.
1 — contact angle 15°. SNFA’s angle codes are 0 = 12°, 1 = 15°, 2 = 18°, 3 = 25° and 62 = 62°.
Several claims on the previous listing do not survive checking against SNFA’s own identification code, and the corrections change what the part actually is.
The digit before CE is not the contact angle. The 9 is the precision class, ABEC 9. The contact angle is the 1 after CE, meaning 15°. Any description of this as a 25° bearing is wrong — a 25° VEX 25 would be coded CE3.
The cross-reference 7005-C-P4 understates the bearing in two ways. The envelope is right and C does mean 15°, but P4 corresponds to about ABEC 7 while this part is ABEC 9, roughly ISO P2 — a class higher. And a 7005-C-P4 is an all-steel bearing, whereas this one is hybrid. It is a search term, not a substitute.
“VEX25-7-CE-1-T” is a different part number, not another spelling of this one. The 7 there is ABEC 7 against this bearing’s ABEC 9. Without /NS it would also be the steel-ball standard bearing rather than the hybrid.
The trailing T does not appear in SNFA’s published identification code and its meaning is unverified. It is retained as a search term and not decoded.
The “DTL” arrangement claim is doubtful. In SNFA nomenclature DTL would be a fixed tandem duplex at light preload, whereas DUL is a universal duplex. No pairing or preload code appears in the designation as marked at all, so none is claimed here. If the arrangement matters, confirm it from the ring etching.
This is an open bearing, not sealed. SNFA’s sealed variants carry an explicit /S code, which is absent here.
Search intent: VEX is a high-speed spindle series. SNFA’s ball-screw support bearings are an entirely different family — the BS 200, BSDU and BSQU ranges at a 62° contact angle. This is not a ball-screw bearing.

Two cautions on the figures. The limiting speed is read from a multi-column SNFA table in which adjacent columns give 84,000 and 93,000 rpm for this size, the higher figure belonging to the sealed and Chromex variants; if the speed is load-bearing for your selection, confirm it against a clean copy of the SNFA catalogue page. And the ratings above are the 15° figures specifically — the 25° version of this bearing is rated 8.00 kN and 3.40 kN, and those must not be applied here. Ball count and diameter are not published.
ABEC 9 running accuracy is only realised against ground seats held to matching tolerance; fitting this into a commercially machined housing throws away most of what makes it worth its price. Observe thrust direction. Ceramic balls are hard and unforgiving of impact — never press a bearing home through the balls, and never strike the rings. Bearings ship preserved rather than charged with service lubricant, and at these speeds the lubrication method is part of the specification, not an afterthought.
Envelope equivalents at 15° in the 25 × 47 × 12 size include 7005C in general ISO format, B7005-C-T-P4S in Schaeffler format and 71905ACD-family numbers in SKF format. For a true like-for-like replacement, though, look for a hybrid ceramic-ball ABEC 9 bearing — SKF’s own high-speed hybrid spindle bearings are the direct descendants of this range, since SNFA production was absorbed into SKF. Treat any all-steel or lower-precision number as a downgrade rather than an equivalent.
