A FAG NU216EM single-row cylindrical roller bearing, 80 mm bore by 140 mm outside diameter by 26 mm width. Line contact between cylindrical rollers and raceways gives this type far higher radial load capacity than a ball bearing of the same envelope. It is a standard bearing for electric motors, gearboxes, pumps, compressors, machine tool spindles and mill drives.

The NU design is the reason this bearing gets chosen for a specific job in an arrangement. Because the inner ring carries no guiding ribs, the shaft is free to grow and move axially through the bearing without generating any thrust load. In a two-bearing shaft that makes it the floating position, while a second bearing at the other end takes the axial location. Thermal growth of a long shaft goes into that float rather than into preload.
That freedom is also the constraint: an NU bearing carries no axial load at all. NJ carries thrust in one direction, NUP in both. Fitting an NU where the design called for NJ or NUP leaves the shaft with no axial restraint, and the shaft walks.
The E internal design fits longer rollers and more of them in the same envelope, raising dynamic capacity over the original series. The machined brass cage is dimensionally stable at high temperature, tolerates aggressive circulating-oil additives, and takes shock and acceleration better than a polymer cage — the reason it is standard in mill and high-speed gearbox positions.

One bearing ships, complete with its inner ring, roller and cage assembly and outer ring. No snap ring, no HJ angle ring, no housing and no seals are included. The NU design accepts an HJ216 angle ring to convert the position to single-direction location; that ring is a separate part.
The inner ring normally takes an interference fit and the outer ring a tighter-than-normal fit in an aluminium or light housing. Cylindrical roller bearings are sensitive to misalignment because of their line contact, so shaft and housing seats want good concentricity and squareness. Because the inner and outer rings separate, the two can be mounted independently — the inner ring heated onto the shaft, the outer ring pressed into the housing — then brought together, which is a real advantage on large assemblies.
Same-specification equivalents are NU216 E cylindrical rollers with a machined brass cage: SKF NU 216 ECM, NSK NU216EM, NTN NU216EG1, Timken NU216EMA, Koyo NU216R. Polyamide-cage forms such as NU216-E-TVP2 carry a lower temperature ceiling. NJ216-E-M, NUP216-E-M and N216-E-M share this envelope but are different parts: they change what the bearing does axially, and swapping between them changes the shaft location scheme.
