What these specs mean in practice

The two current figures do different jobs and both matter. 60 A rated is the continuous current the module will carry indefinitely, and it is what has to cover the axis’s steady cutting and traversing load. 120 A maximum is the short-term overload — twice rated — and that is what accelerates the axis and holds it against a sudden load. A module sized only on the continuous figure will trip on rapid reversals; a machine whose original module was the 120 A-peak part needs that peak headroom, which is exactly why substituting the 40/80 A 6SC6114 does not work even though it fits the rack.

At 60 A rated this is a substantial feed module, suited to a heavy axis — a large machining centre’s Z, a big table drive, a gantry — rather than a light auxiliary axis.

Because a feed module is fed from the DC link, it cannot run alone. A SIMODRIVE drive group is modular and comprises a line filter, a commutating reactor, a line supply infeed module, then the drive modules, plus monitoring, pulsed-resistor, capacitor or HGL modules where the application needs them. This module is one of the drive modules in that chain. The infeed module must also be rated for the total simultaneous demand of every drive module on the link, not for this one alone — adding or upsizing an axis module without checking the infeed is a common cause of intermittent faults that get blamed on the axis.

Observe DC link polarity and torque the bus connections properly — a loose joint at this current is a fire risk. Isolate and allow the DC link capacitors to discharge fully before touching bus terminals; they hold a lethal charge after the mains has been removed. If modules sit in several tiers or side by side, the equipment bus and, where used, the drive bus need the correct connecting cables between them. Insert the control module before commissioning and confirm the axis parameters match this frame size rather than inheriting another axis’s set.
