A single RHP angular contact ball bearing in the 7205 envelope — 25 mm bore, 52 mm outside diameter, 15 mm width. Open, 40° contact angle, polyamide cage, and universally ground so two like bearings clamp together to produce light preload. This is the heavy-thrust end of the angular contact range, for pump and gearbox shafts, worm drives, screw jacks and machine spindles where axial load dominates.

Contact angle is the single most important number on an angular contact bearing, and 40° is the steep end. A steep angle points the ball load close to the shaft axis, so thrust capacity is high and axial stiffness is high — several times what a 15° spindle bearing in the same envelope can take. What you give up is speed: the steeper the angle, the more the balls are worked by centrifugal effects and the more heat the bearing makes at high rpm. So a 40° bearing is the right choice where thrust is the problem and speed is moderate, and the wrong choice for a high-rpm grinding spindle. The E design packs in more or larger balls, lifting load capacity again within the same outside dimensions. Universal grinding means the faces are ground to a calculated stand-off, so bolting two together gives light preload with nothing to shim. The polyamide cage runs quietly and tolerates momentary misalignment better than a pressed-steel cage, but it sets a temperature ceiling of roughly 120 °C in continuous service and does not get on with certain synthetic oils and aggressive solvents — a steel- or brass-caged bearing is the answer above that.

Thrust is carried in one direction only, so the assembly must oppose it — a second bearing back-to-back or face-to-face, or a shoulder. Orientation matters: the wide land of the outer ring faces the thrust load, and fitting one backwards puts the entire axial load onto the ball shoulder that is not designed for it. A 40° bearing also wants a genuine axial load to keep the ball set tracking properly; running one nearly unloaded at speed invites ball skidding and cage wear. Interference fit adds preload on top of anything ground in, so check the shaft and housing sizes against the drawing, and never press through the ball complement.
RHP bearing production passed to NSK, so this designation is now met by NSK numbers. Genuine 40° cross-references in this size include SKF 7205 BEP and 7205 BECBP, FAG 7205-B-TVP, NSK 7205B and NTN 7205B — all 25 x 52 x 15 mm, 40°, and all real interchanges. Related sizes fill the same envelope at a shallower angle: 7205AC and 7205 ACD are 25° and 7205C is 15°. Those are different parts with materially lower thrust capacity, not substitutes, though it is worth knowing they exist if your shaft is speed-limited rather than thrust-limited. Cage material also differs across the family — a TVP or BECBP build swaps the polyamide cage for glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide or machined brass, which changes the temperature limit rather than the fit.
