What this part is

A Koyo 22216RH double-row spherical roller bearing measuring 80 mm bore x 140 mm outside diameter x 33 mm wide. Straight (cylindrical) bore, open on both sides, C4 radial internal clearance. Spherical roller bearings carry very high radial load plus axial load in both directions, and the spherical outer raceway lets the inner-ring assembly swivel so the bearing self-aligns to shaft deflection or housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.

Decoding the designation

222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, ISO dimension series 22.
16 — bore code; 16 x 5 = 80 mm bore.
RH — Koyo internal design. Two rows of long convex symmetrical rollers, a pressed steel cage, and a floating centre guide ring instead of a central inner-ring rib. Koyo rates the RH design above its own R design for load capacity.
C4 — radial internal clearance greater than C3, which is itself greater than normal.
No K in the designation — straight cylindrical bore. No adapter sleeve is involved.
No W33 in the designation — this outer ring has no relubrication groove and no lubrication holes.

What these specs mean in practice

C4 is chosen deliberately, not as an upgrade. Extra clearance is what absorbs a heavy interference fit on the shaft, a large temperature difference between inner and outer ring, or thermal growth in the housing — all three eat clearance once the machine is hot. Fit C4 where the design calls for it and the bearing runs with the right operating clearance. Fit C4 where normal clearance was specified and a lightly loaded bearing can let its rollers skid instead of roll, which polishes the raceway and shortens life.

The RH design’s symmetrical rollers and guide ring are what let it run longer rollers than a ribbed asymmetrical design in the same envelope, so more roller length is in contact and load capacity is higher. The trade is that the guide-ring design is slightly less tolerant at very high speed than Koyo’s brass-caged R type.

With no lubrication groove or holes in the outer ring, this bearing cannot be relubricated through the housing bore. Grease has to reach it from the sides, so plan the housing cavities and grease-escape path accordingly. If your housing has a feed hole aimed at the outer ring, you want a W33 version instead.

Fitting notes

A straight-bore spherical roller bearing is mounted with an interference fit on the shaft, so it needs to be driven or heated on and pulled off — there is no adapter sleeve to loosen. Support the inner ring, not the outer, when pressing on. Because the outer ring can swivel, do not use the outer ring to drive the assembly. Grease fill on a 33 mm wide 222-series bearing is typically 30–50% of the free space; overpacking a spherical roller bearing is a common cause of early running temperature rise.

Interchange guidance

The 80 x 140 x 33 mm 222-series envelope is shared across the industry, so 22216 in another brand’s nomenclature drops into the same seat. Match the closure, clearance and lubrication features, not just the number. Koyo RH corresponds most closely to the flangeless-inner-ring, guide-ring, stamped-steel-cage design that SKF calls CC and NSK calls CD. 22216E is carried on this listing as a dimensional cross-reference for the same envelope — the E designation is a different, later high-capacity internal design with its own load ratings, so treat it as a size match rather than a like-for-like internal design. 53516 is the GOST designation for the same envelope. A W33 version of any of these has a lubrication groove and three holes in the outer ring, which this bearing does not.
