A Siemens KNX / instabus EIB line and backbone coupler, catalogue designation N 140/02. It sits between two KNX twisted-pair bus lines and passes telegrams of up to 64 bytes between them under the control of a loadable filter table. The same hardware covers three roles set in the application program: line coupler joining a line to a main line, area (backbone) coupler joining a main line to an area line, and line amplifier or repeater extending a single line. The two bus lines are galvanically isolated from one another.
The 5WG1 block identifies the Siemens GAMMA instabus / KNX range. 140 is the coupler family. 1AB is the N-system DIN rail distribution-board housing. The closing 02 is the hardware generation; the current production part in the same family is the N 140/13, order number 5WG1140-1AB13, and a data-rail-mounted sibling carries the suffix 03. The faceplate name N 140/02 repeats the two significant fields, 140 for the coupler family and 02 for the generation.
The filter table is the point of the device. Without it, every group telegram generated anywhere in an installation is seen by every device, and telegram load becomes the ceiling on system size. With a filter table downloaded from the commissioning tool, the coupler forwards only the group addresses that actually have subscribers on the far side, so each line carries its own traffic plus what it genuinely needs. Galvanic isolation means a fault or overload on a subordinate line does not propagate. The coupler also detects and reports communication faults on the subordinate line, and three front LEDs show operating state and traffic on each side.
Operating power for the coupler electronics is drawn from the higher-ranking line, so that line needs a KNX bus power supply present. The subordinate line requires its own bus power supply; the coupler does not feed it. That is the usual source of confusion when a newly fitted coupler appears dead on one side.
1 Pc. Coupler module only. No KNX bus connector blocks, no bus power supply, no DIN rail, no application program media and no software licence.
The unit is an N-system device for a 35 mm DIN rail inside a distribution board, protection degree IP20. Both bus lines land on separate bus connector terminals, and the physical address, application program and filter table are downloaded once from the commissioning tool through the learning button.
The N 140/13 is the current-generation replacement in the same family and covers the same three roles. The data-rail version 5WG1140-1AB03 is the same function in a different mechanical mounting and is not interchangeable with the terminal-block version. The N 141 series is a DALI gateway, not a coupler, despite the adjacent number, and IP routers such as the N 146 couple KNX to Ethernet rather than KNX to KNX.
