A Moeller Z00 series thermal overload relay — a three-pole bimetal overload element with an adjustable current dial, a hand/auto reset selector, a reset button and a test/OFF button. It is not a breaker: it provides motor overload protection only and relies on an upstream fuse or circuit breaker for short-circuit protection. This is the 0.24 to 0.40 A band.
Z – Moeller thermal overload relay00 – sized for contactor frame 00; the Z00 fits contactor sizes 00M, 00AM, 0M and 0AM0,4 – top of the setting range in amps, European decimal comma; written Z00-0.4 in North America
The dial is set to the motor full-load current, and the relay trips at 125% of the dial setting. For motors with a service factor of 1.0, Moeller’s own instruction is to set the dial to 90% of full-load current rather than to nameplate. Single-phasing sensitivity means the relay reacts to a lost phase, not just to a symmetrical overload — the failure mode that actually burns out small three-phase motors. The relay is supplied with the reset lever set to Hand, which is what you want on two-wire control so a cooled bimetal cannot restart the motor on its own; switch it to Auto only with three-wire control. Short-circuit protection has to come from elsewhere: maximum 15 A fuse or 25 A circuit breaker at 600 V AC for this rating.

Sold as 1 piece — the relay only. Nothing else is in the box: the contactor, the EZ00 base needed for separate (stand-alone) mounting, the MDE-287 external reset button used with enclosed relays and any PDT-A2 cover kits are all separate items.
For direct mounting the relay clips onto the load side of a matching DIL00M, DIL00AM, DIL0M or DIL0AM contactor and picks up its power connections there; for stand-alone mounting you need the EZ00 base. Always wire all three poles even in single-phase applications. Allow 5 mm clearance between adjacent relays or their thermal calibration interferes. On an enclosed assembly, remember the ambient limit drops to 40 °C, and fit the MDE external reset button so a trip can be cleared without opening the door.
Z00 and ZE are the two relays that get swapped by mistake. The ZE covers the same 0.24 to 0.40 A band as ZE-0.4 but mounts on a contactor only — there is no separate-mounting base for it — and its circuit-breaker short-circuit protection is limited to 480 V AC rather than 600 V. Within the Z00 range the setting band is the part: Z00-0.24 and Z00-0.6 are the neighbours and neither protects a 0.32 A motor properly. Z1, Z4, Z5 and ZW7 are larger frames for larger contactors. Eaton’s modern equivalent line is the ZB/ZE series; check the contactor frame before assuming a fit.
