Product Description

A hollowshaft encoder slides over the end of an existing motor or gearbox shaft and clamps to it, then is held against rotation by a compliant tether. That removes the flexible coupling, the coupling’s backlash and the bearing side-load that kill shaft-mounted encoders in mill and heavy-plant service. The HS35R is the ruggedised member of that family.

Decoding the designation

HS35R | 1024 | 8 | 1 | P | 7

HS35R — heavy-duty hollowshaft encoder1024 — 1024 pulses per revolution8 — 5/8″ bore, electrically isolated (non-metallic insert)1 — 4.5″ C-face tether (no protective cover)P — differential A, B and Z, 5–26 VDC in, 5–26 VDC out (7272 line driver), extended temperature range7 — 10-pin MS connector plus mating connector suppliedTwo details in that string are easy to miss and both are worth money. The P output code is the extended-temperature build — −40 to +100 °C instead of the standard −40 to +85 °C, with a stainless steel shaft rather than aluminium. And the 7 termination code means Dynapar shipped the mating connector in the box, which is otherwise a separately ordered MCN-N6 (MS3106A-18-1S).

Why the electrically isolated bore matters

The isolating insert in the bore breaks the electrical path between the driven shaft and the encoder body. On a VFD-driven motor that is not a nicety: common-mode shaft currents from the inverter will otherwise find earth through the encoder bearings, pitting the races and injecting noise straight into the quadrature signals. If you have ever chased intermittent count loss on an inverter drive, this is the specification that fixes it.

Why differential outputs rather than single-ended

Differential A/B/Z sends each channel and its complement over a twisted pair, so common-mode noise picked up on a long cable run cancels at the receiver. On a plant floor with contactors and drives, single-ended outputs start dropping counts somewhere past a few metres; differential runs tens of metres reliably. The 7272 driver here also carries reverse-polarity and short-circuit protection.

What is actually in the box

The carton is the original Dynapar box, Gurnee, Illinois, labelled PART NO. HS35R1024/81P7, serial 1856700, date code 1223. The box has been opened. Contents observed: the encoder in a sealed anti-static bag with its tether bracket fitted and the 10-pin MS connector in place; the Amphenol 10-pin mating connector in a separate bag labelled Amphenol P/N 97-30ST-101-2, Mfg P/N C1042355-010, 1 EACH; and the tether mounting hardware — hex bolt, two flat washers and a nylon insulating shoulder washer. Everything appears unused. Not included: mating cable assembly (order 1400635-XXXX or 109209-XXXX for the NEMA 4 version), and note that ingress protection depends on the connector rating — the MS mating connector is rated NEMA 12, so use the NEMA 4 cable and connector 109209-XXXX for genuinely watertight service.

Compatible accessories

Tether kits 114573-0001 (4.5″ C-face), 114574-0001 (slotted, for standard AC motor fan covers), 114575-0001 (8.5″ C-face). Cover kits 114591-0001 (56 C-face), 114592-0001 (fan cover). Rod tether 116233-0001. Mating connectors MCN-N6 (10-pin MS3106A-18-1S) and MCN-N6N4 (10-pin NEMA 4).

Also written HS35R102481P7, HS35R-102481P7, HS35R1024/81P7, HS35R 1024 8 1 P 7. Closely related but not identical: HS35R102484P7, which is the same encoder with the tether-plus-cover fixing option instead of the bare 4.5″ C-face tether.

Source-data note: the record’s 5/8″ bore, 5–26 V and 10-pin data are correct. Missing entirely was the 1024 PPR resolution — the single most important specification on any encoder — along with the hollowshaft (through-bore) construction, the differential output format with index, the extended temperature build, the electrically isolated bore, and the fact that the mating connector and tether hardware are supplied. All have been added from the Dynapar ordering table and the carton label. The previous copy’s “10 pins for easy connection” has been replaced with the actual connector designation.
