Low inertia is a choice, not a bonus. Rockwell publishes 0.00012 kg·m2 rotor inertia for the B1003 build. A low-inertia rotor accelerates hard and settles fast, which is what you want on a packaging axis making thousands of short index moves an hour. The trade-off is inertia mismatch: if the reflected load inertia is more than roughly ten times the rotor, the loop becomes difficult to tune and you will chase resonance. High-inertia VPF or VPH motors exist for exactly that reason – do not treat them as interchangeable on torque alone.
4.18 N·m continuous stall vs 11.15 N·m peak. Continuous stall torque is what the motor will hold indefinitely at 40 °C ambient; peak is a short-duration acceleration figure. Size the motor on the RMS torque of your duty cycle and check the peak against the acceleration transient – sizing on peak alone overheats the winding.
The 480 V winding is not optional. The B-class winding is wound for a 480 V AC / 650 V DC bus. Running it from a 240 V-class bus will simply not reach rated speed; running a 240 V-class motor on a 480 V bus destroys it. Match the voltage class to the drive.
The holding brake holds, it does not stop. 4.18 N·m at 24 V DC, 0.5 A, spring-applied and electrically released. It is a parking brake for vertical or clamped axes at standstill and for loss-of-power hold. Using it to decelerate a moving axis wears the friction face quickly. Note you must supply 24 V DC to release it – a motor that will not turn by hand on the bench usually just has an unpowered brake.
Absolute multi-turn feedback earns its keep at start-up. The 18-bit single-turn / 12-bit multi-turn encoder retains position across a power cycle, so a machine with hard travel limits or a loaded vertical axis does not have to be homed after every restart. That is a commissioning and safety argument as much as a resolution one.
VPL motors are the intended partner for Kinetix 5500 single-axis drives and Kinetix 5700 dual-axis inverters, and are also usable on Kinetix 6500 and 2198-series hardware. The single SpeedTec DIN connector on this build means one hybrid motor cable carries power, brake and feedback – simpler wiring, but you must order the matching 2090-series hybrid cable; it is not included. In Studio 5000 the motor is selected from the motion database by catalogue number, and the drive reads the encoder’s electronic nameplate, so there is no manual entry of Ke, torque constant or pole count.
Rockwell lists VPL-B1003F-PJ14AA as Active with a 5-day lead time – this is a current part, not an obsolete one, so this listing is a price and availability play rather than a life-extension purchase. Related builds in the same frame differ only in options and are not drop-in equivalents: -PJ12AA is the same motor without the brake (option 2 in place of 4), -CJ14AA substitutes a different feedback device, and -PK14AA / VPL-B1003T-… are higher-speed windings. If your machine’s Studio 5000 project names one of those, the axis will fault on motor-mismatch unless the project is updated.
Used. The nameplate reads PRODUCT OF MEXICO, plant 1150, dated 22 September 2018 – the original listing’s “Made In USA” was incorrect and has been corrected. The connector shroud is damaged – see the photographs and assess before buying; the shroud is what maintains the IP50 seal and the strain relief at the SpeedTec interface, so plan on replacing it or accepting a reduced ingress rating. Motor only: no cables, no mating connector, no mounting hardware, no documentation. Not functionally tested.
Nameplate carries cULus (file E146578), CE, KC, RCM, EAC and China RoHS marks, and declares conformity to EN 60034-1.
