An ABB SV/S 30.640.5 bus power supply — the device that generates the 30 V DC system voltage for a KNX / ABB i-bus line, with the line choke built in. It is a modular DIN-rail component (MDRC) four modules wide, and unlike a basic bus supply it is a KNX device in its own right: it reports diagnostics through ETS communication objects and shows status on front LEDs.
SV – Spannungsversorgung, ABB’s designation for a bus power supply (SU is the uninterruptible version with battery backup)S – Reiheneinbau / MDRC, modular DIN-rail mounted30 – 30 V DC bus output640 – rated output current in milliamps.5 – version within the family; a trailing .1, as in SV/S30.640.5.1, marks a later revision with its own ETS applicationGH Q631 0048 R0111 – ABB internal/legacy article reference carried on the device label
Three details separate this from a plain bus supply. First, there is a second 30 V DC output that is not choked — it exists to feed an additional line through a separate external choke, which is how you get two segments off one supply without buying a second unit. Do not connect a KNX line directly to that output without a choke, because the bus needs the choke for signal transmission. Second, the output is protected on both counts: overload current is limited to 0.9 A and short-circuit current to 1.4 A, so a shorted bus pair or an over-loaded line will not destroy the supply. Third, the 200 ms power-failure buffering rides out brief mains dips, which stops a whole line reinitialising on a supply blip. Because the diagnostics run over ETS, this supply appears in the project and can raise a fault object — useful, but it also means the ETS application must match the device version.
Function: KNX / ABB i-bus system power supply with integrated chokeBus output: 30 V DC, rated 640 mAAdditional output: 30 V DC without choke, for a second line via a separate external chokeOverload current: 0.9 AShort-circuit current: 1.4 AOutput protection: short-circuit and overload protectedPower-failure buffering time: 200 msDiagnostics: advanced diagnostics with ETS communication objects; LED status displayMounting: DIN rail, modular DIN rail component (MDRC)Width: 4 division units (modules)
Sold as 1 piece — the supply only. The external choke needed to use the second 30 V DC output for a further line is a separate item and is not included, and no bus connecting terminals or DIN rail are supplied.
Size the line to the 640 mA rating by summing the bus current draw of every device on the segment, and remember the KNX topology limit on devices per segment applies at the same time — whichever ceiling you reach first is the one that governs. To feed a second line, take the unchoked 30 V output through a dedicated choke; wiring it straight to a bus pair will load out the signal. Import the correct ETS application for the exact version on the label: SV/S30.640.5 and SV/S30.640.5.1 are catalogued separately, and an application mismatch shows up as unreadable diagnostics rather than an obvious failure. The status LEDs are the fastest first check when a line goes quiet, before you start suspecting couplers or addressing.
SV and SU are different products: SU/S30.640.x is the uninterruptible supply that maintains the bus from a connected battery during a mains failure, and it is an upgrade rather than an equivalent. Within the SV family the current rating is the part — 160 mA, 320 mA and 640 mA units are not interchangeable once a line’s current budget has been calculated. SV/S 30.640.3.1 and SV/S30.640.5.1 are neighbouring catalogue items with their own article numbers and ETS applications; check the label rather than assuming from the family name. Third-party KNX supplies are bus-compatible by standard but differ in width, terminal layout, diagnostics and the presence of a second output, so a panel-for-panel swap wants the same article number.
