What these specs mean in practice

The 731 sits at the entry end of the 90-70 processor range. 32 Kbyte of configurable memory and 512 discrete points are real ceilings — a large machine or plant application will outgrow this CPU, and the floating-point models (for example the IC697CPX782 with an 80486 core) exist for that reason. If you are replacing a larger 90-70 CPU with this one, check the program size and I/O count first, because it will refuse a configuration that exceeds its limits. Conversely, for a small legacy 90-70 rack it is the correct and space-efficient part.

Installation and setup notes

Fit a fresh lithium battery before commissioning — a surplus CPU arrives with a dead or absent cell and will not retain the program or clock without one. IC697CPU731X, IC697CPU731 and the other revision letters (H, L and so on) are the same processor specification. Other 90-70 CPU numbers — CPU771, CPU772, CPU780, CPX772, CPX782 — are different processors with different clock speeds, memory sizes and slot widths and are not drop-in equivalents. Series 90-70 (IC697) modules do not fit Series 90-30 (IC693), Series Six (IC600) or Series Five racks.
