This is a Fincor Series 6140 adjustable-frequency AC motor control — an inverter that takes a 460 V three-phase supply and produces a variable-frequency, variable-voltage output to run a standard three-phase AC induction motor at adjustable speed. It is a complete drive, not a control card and not a soft starter: a soft starter only ramps a motor up to line frequency and then gets out of the way, whereas this varies speed continuously across the running range. Fincor’s own literature calls the family a motor control rather than a VFD, but that is nomenclature, not function.
6140 — the Fincor Series 6140 adjustable-frequency AC family. Note that 6140 is the family designation, not a rating: it is not 6140 watts, amps or volts, and it does not encode horsepower.
S0073A — the factory build / specification number. This is the field that carries the actual configuration — the horsepower rating, the enclosure, the option board fit and the operator-interface arrangement the drive left the factory with. Two Series 6140 drives with different S-numbers are not the same product, and this is the number to quote to a repair house or match against your machine documentation.
Match the supply first, then the motor. A 460 V three-phase drive must see 460 V three-phase: it cannot be run from a 230 V supply, and single-phasing it will trip it or destroy the DC bus. Fincor built the 6140 range across the usual industrial horsepower ladder — 3, 5, 7.5, 10, 15 and 20 HP were catalogued, in 460 V and 380 V input versions — so the frame size and the S-number together tell you where in that ladder a given unit sits. Size against your motor’s nameplate full-load amps, not its stated horsepower: two 10 HP motors of different vintage and efficiency draw meaningfully different current, and the drive protects on amps.
Second, this generation of drive is V/Hz controlled in character: excellent for fans, pumps, conveyors, mixers and extruders where the load is predictable, and less suited to a job demanding full torque at a standstill or precise torque regulation. That is not a defect; it is what the family was built for, and it is why 6140 drives are still in service on pumps and conveyors decades on.
One drive ships. No motor, no operator station or remote keypad, no line reactor or load reactor, no dynamic-braking resistor, no EMC filter, no bypass contactor, no enclosure if the unit is a chassis build, no mounting hardware and no manual are included. Whether an operator interface was ever part of this build is set by the S-number, not by the box.
Isolate and lock out upstream before wiring, and let the DC bus capacitors discharge fully before opening the terminal cover — a drive switched off seconds ago is still lethal. Mount vertically with the specified clearance above and below for convection airflow; an inverter of this generation in a sealed box with no clearance will nuisance-trip on overtemperature long before it actually fails. Ground the drive and the motor frame back to the same point, and use screened motor cable with the screen landed at both ends, because a 460 V PWM output radiates enough to upset encoders, thermocouples and analog signals sharing a duct.
Before the first run, set the motor nameplate parameters — rated voltage, full-load current, base frequency and base speed — and set acceleration, deceleration and current limit to suit the load; a drive left on factory defaults will trip on a loaded conveyor start. Then check rotation at low speed before committing to the driven equipment: on a pump or fan, reverse rotation does real damage.
