Product Description

What this part is

A Timken 74555 tapered roller bearing cone: the inner ring complete with its tapered rollers and cage, for a 5-1/2 inch straight bore shaft. This is a large inch-series industrial cone, the sort used in heavy gearboxes, mill and crusher shafts, pinion and axle positions, conveyor head shafts and other places where high radial load arrives together with one-way thrust.

What is in the box

Cone only. A tapered roller bearing is a two-piece assembly — the cone (inner ring, rollers and cage) and the cup (the outer race). This listing is the cone. The cup is a separate part number and is not included. Unless the cup already in the machine is sound and staying put, a cup will be needed too.

What these specs mean in practice

Cone and cup are designed as a pair, and the pairing is what sets the bearing’s contact angle, its load ratings and its internal setting. Fitting a cone to a cup it was not designed for gives the wrong roller-to-raceway geometry and the bearing will not reach its rated life even though the parts go together. A single tapered roller bearing takes thrust in one direction only, so shafts normally run two of them opposed, which is also what allows the assembly to be set to a specific end play or preload.

Quantity and configuration

One cone. If the machine uses two opposed tapered roller bearings, each position needs its own cone and cup.

Fitting notes

Read the number stamped on the cup already in the housing and match this cone to that number rather than assuming a mate. On a 5-1/2 inch bore the interference fit is substantial — heat the cone for mounting rather than pressing it cold, and never drive mounting force through the rollers. Tapered roller bearings have no built-in internal clearance: end play or preload has to be established at assembly to the machine builder’s figure using shims, a spacer or the adjusting nut. Inspect the rollers and cage before fitting; a nicked roller or a distorted cage makes the cone scrap.

Condition note

This cone is new old stock and shows surface staining from storage. That is cosmetic discolouration of the preservative on the outside of the part, not raceway damage — but inspect the roller and raceway surfaces on arrival as you would with any stored bearing.

Interchange guidance

Cross-references cover the 74555 designation in its spaced and hyphenated forms. Keep the three categories distinct: a cone number, a cup number and a complete assembly number are different parts. Timken numbers carrying a -90xxx suffix are complete assemblies rather than cones, so if a full bearing is needed this is not that part number.
