The shallow 1.91 K factor keeps it radially biased and passes little induced thrust to the opposing bearing. The effective load centre sits 0.40 in inside the cone backface, which is a long way in: use it, not the physical face, when calculating bearing spread on a two-bearing shaft, or the span will come out short.

Press the cone on square with the driver bearing on the backface only, never on the rollers or cage. Keep the shaft shoulder within the da/db range and the shaft fillet under 0.06 in. A tapered roller bearing has no internal clearance until it is mounted, so the end play or preload is established after the cup is fully seated in its housing.
3585 is dimensionally standardised, so 3585 cones from Timken, Koyo, NTN, Bower/BCA and Federal-Mogul interchange with one another and with any maker’s 3520 cup. Be careful inside this family: 3576 and 3577 share the same 1.6250 in bore, the same inner ring width and identical published ratings, and run in the same 3520 cup, differing only in permissible shaft fillet radius, backface shoulder diameter and weight. They are close relatives rather than blind substitutes — check the fillet allowance against your shaft before swapping.
