Product Description

What this part is

Five FAG 72200C tapered roller bearing cones. A cone is the inner ring complete with its tapered rollers and cage, here for a 2 inch straight bore shaft on the inch 722-series envelope. Cones in this size go into gearboxes, pinion and axle shafts, wheel and hub positions, conveyor and mill shafts — anywhere a bearing has to take heavy radial load together with thrust in one direction.

Decoding the designation

72200 — inch-series tapered roller cone numberC — FAG variant marking carried on the cartonK- prefix — in the FAG scheme a K prefix designates the cone (inner ring assembly), which is why the same part appears as K-72200-C

What is in the box

Five cones, no cups. A tapered roller bearing is a two-piece assembly: the cone (inner ring, rollers, cage) plus the cup (outer race). This is a lot of five cones. The cups are separate part numbers and are not included, so unless the cups already in the machines are sound and staying in place, cups will have to be bought as well.

What these specs mean in practice

Cone and cup are designed as a pair, and it is the pairing that sets the contact angle, the load ratings and the internal setting of the finished bearing. A cone run against a cup it was not designed for will assemble but will not reach its rated life, so match this cone to the cup number the machine actually uses rather than to something of the same bore. A single-row tapered roller bearing takes thrust in one direction only; shafts normally run two opposed, and that opposition is what allows end play or preload to be set.

Quantity and configuration

Five cones, sold as one lot. Useful for a fleet of identical machines, a rebuild shop stocking a common size, or a shaft that runs two opposed bearings across several units — each position still needs its own cup.

Fitting notes

Read the cup number stamped in the housing before ordering and match this cone to it. Heat the cone for mounting rather than pressing it cold onto a heavy interference fit, and never drive mounting force through the rollers. Tapered roller bearings have no built-in internal clearance, so end play or preload has to be established at assembly to the machine builder’s figure using shims, a spacer or the adjusting nut. Inspect each cone before fitting; a nicked roller or a distorted cage makes that cone scrap.

Interchange guidance

Cross-references cover 72200C, 72200-C, K-72200-C and the plain 72200 cone designation. Keep the categories straight: a cone number, a cup number and a complete assembly number are three different parts. In the Timken scheme, numbers carrying a -90xxx suffix are complete factory assemblies, not cones.
