The spherical outside diameter is what makes the insert self-aligning: it swivels in the housing seat and takes up shaft-to-housing angular error at installation, so a frame that is not perfectly true does not preload the raceways. Setscrew locking is the fastest mounting to fit and to strip off again, and it holds well where rotation runs consistently in one direction. The single-lip contact seal keeps grease in the bearing cavity and keeps plant dust out at these speeds.
The spherical outside diameter mates with Dodge SC-series housings across the pillow block, two-bolt flange, four-bolt flange, take-up and hanger ranges. The insert is the wearing part of those units and is replaced independently of the housing.
