Cylindrical rollers give a line contact rather than a point contact, so radial capacity is high for the envelope. In the N design the ribless outer ring lets the roller set float axially, which allows the shaft to expand thermally without loading the bearing axially. An NJ design of the same size locates the shaft in one direction and an NUP in both, so the design suffix, not the size, decides axial location. C3 clearance suits an interference fit, a temperature rise across the bearing, or both.

The bearing is a non-locating position in a shaft system, so a second bearing elsewhere on the shaft carries the axial location. The straight bore mounts directly on the shaft seat with an interference fit on the ring that rotates; even heating of the inner ring seats it without loading the roller path.
The ISO equivalent designation is N226 at C3 clearance. An NU226, NJ226 or NUP226 of the same envelope differs in rib arrangement and therefore in axial location, and a CN or C2 clearance variant differs in fitted clearance; those are related sizes rather than interchanges.
