Product Description

What this part is:

A FAG NU315-E-M1 single-row cylindrical roller bearing, 75 mm bore x 160 mm outside diameter x 37 mm wide, straight bore, with the increased-capacity E internal design, a two-piece solid brass cage and P6 precision. One row of cylindrical rollers carries 285 kN dynamic radial load at speeds to 5 100 rpm in a 42.5 mm cross-section. This is a heavy industrial bearing for gearboxes, electric motors and drive shafts.

Decoding the designation:

  • NU — single row with two integral flanges on the outer ring and a plain, flangeless inner ring. The bearing accommodates axial displacement in both directions.
  • 3 — ISO dimension series 3 (heavy section).
  • 15 — 75 mm bore.
  • E — FAG increased load capacity design: a larger, fuller roller complement within the same boundary dimensions.
  • M1 — two-piece solid machined brass cage, roller-guided.
  • P6 — ISO tolerance class 6, one step tighter than normal, equivalent to ABEC 3. The P63 form of the marking denotes P6 tolerances combined with C3 radial internal clearance.
  • XL — the current FAG designation prefix for this optimised generation; NU315-E-XL-M1 and NU315-E-M1 are the same bearing across catalogue revisions.

Axial location and the NU, N, NJ and NUP designs:

Flange arrangement is the specification a cylindrical roller bearing is selected on, and the four designs are not interchangeable:

  • NU — two outer-ring flanges, plain inner ring. Non-locating: the rollers run axially along the inner raceway, so the shaft moves axially through the bearing. This bearing.
  • N — two inner-ring flanges, plain outer ring. Also non-locating, with the flanges on the opposite ring.
  • NJ — one inner-ring flange. Locates the shaft in one direction.
  • NUP — two inner-ring flanges, one a loose flange ring. Locates the shaft in both directions.

An NU315 in place of an NJ315 or NUP315 removes axial location from that position, and an NJ315 or NUP315 in place of this NU315 adds axial constraint the arrangement did not allow for. All four share the 75 x 160 x 37 mm envelope, so the flange arrangement is the specification that decides fit.

What these specs mean in practice:

Line contact between roller and raceway is what buys the load capacity: a cylindrical roller spreads its load along a line rather than a point, giving several times the radial rating of a 6315 ball bearing in the same envelope, at the cost of a lower speed ceiling and no meaningful thrust capacity. The E design raises that capacity again by fitting a larger roller set into the same boundary dimensions.

A two-piece solid brass cage suits heavy loads, shock loading, high temperature and oil lubrication, and tolerates conditions that break down a polyamide cage. P6 tolerances tighten bore, outside diameter and running accuracy one class beyond normal, which matters where the shaft position or the noise floor is specified. Because the plain inner ring separates from the roller and cage assembly, the two halves mount independently — useful where shaft and housing are built up apart from one another.

Published ratings and mounting data:

  • Bore d: 75 mm (2.9528 in) — Outside diameter D: 160 mm (6.2992 in) — Width B: 37 mm (1.4567 in)
  • Basic dynamic load rating Cr: 285 kN (285 000 N)
  • Limiting speed: 5 100 rpm
  • Rows: 1 — rolling element: cylindrical roller
  • Bore form: straight cylindrical
  • Flange arrangement: two outer-ring flanges, plain inner ring (NU)
  • Cage: two-piece solid machined brass, roller-guided (M1)
  • Internal design: FAG E, increased load capacity
  • Precision class: P6 (ISO class 6, equivalent to ABEC 3)
  • Closure: open, no seals or shields
  • Material: through-hardened bearing steel
  • Separable: the plain inner ring lifts away from the outer ring, roller and cage assembly
  • Standard: DIN 5412-1

Quantity and configuration:

Sold as 1 Pc — one complete bearing: the twin-flanged outer ring with its roller and brass cage assembly, and the plain inner ring. The two halves are a matched set.

Fitting notes:

The plain inner ring goes on with an interference fit, heated or pressed square to the shaft shoulder, and the outer ring with its roller set seats in the housing bore to the fit the drawing calls for. The halves mount independently and the roller assembly is introduced over the inner ring afterwards, squarely and without cocking the rollers over the ring corner. Each ring is marked, and the roller assembly returns to its original outer ring. A brass cage of this size takes oil or grease relubrication on a schedule set by the running temperature.

Interchange guidance:

Same-specification equivalents at 75 x 160 x 37 mm with the NU flange arrangement, E internal design and a machined brass cage: SKF NU 315 ECM, NSK NU315EM, NTN NU315EM, Koyo NU315M, Nachi NU315EM, Timken NU315EMA. FAG NU315-E-XL-M1 is the same bearing under the current designation. Related sizes, not substitutes: N315, NJ315 and NUP315 share this envelope but carry their flanges differently and behave differently axially; NU315-E-TVP2 is the same bearing with a polyamide cage and a lower temperature ceiling; the C3, C4 and C5 clearance variants run different fit-ups; a normal-tolerance NU315-E-M1 holds a looser accuracy class than this P6 unit; and the double-row NN3015 mounts entirely differently.
