The cross-section is square: half the difference between the 7 in outside diameter and the 5 in bore is 1 in, which equals the width. That proportion is characteristic of the imperial journal series.
A deep groove ball bearing carries radial load as its primary duty and takes a moderate amount of thrust in either direction, because the balls sit in a deep circumferential groove in both rings rather than on an offset contact line.
