What this part is

A matched duplex pair of RHP 7203E super-precision angular contact ball bearings, 17 mm bore, 40 mm outside diameter, 12 mm wide each. The 7200 series is the medium section of the super-precision angular contact range and the usual choice where a small spindle has to carry a real thrust load as well as speed.

Decoding the designation

In the RHP scheme 7203 is the ISO 72-series section, E sets the contact angle at 25°, T is a phenolic resin cage, DU marks the pieces as a ground duplex set, and M is medium preload. The equivalent RHP B-series designation for the same bearing is B7203X3TADUMEP7, in which X3 reads the angle a second way as 25°.

What these specs mean in practice

A 25° contact angle carries more thrust and gives higher axial stiffness than a 15° at the cost of limiting speed, which suits spindles and screw drives that see substantial axial load. Medium preload sits between light and heavy: stiffer than light, with more heat generation and a lower speed ceiling. Phenolic resin rides the outer-ring land, is light and oil-absorbent, and works to about 120 °C.

Thrust direction

Fitting notes

The V-shaped etch across the two outer-ring faces aligns to give the ground arrangement; rotating one ring relative to the other changes the preload the set was ground for. The rings clamp solid against the housing shoulder and shaft nut, so seat squareness governs the running accuracy the set delivers.

The direct substitutes are an RHP or NSK 7203E duplex pair at medium preload with a phenolic cage, and the B-series form B7203X3TADUMEP7. A 7203C is the same 17 x 40 x 12 mm envelope at 15° and a 7203A at 30° — related sizes, not interchanges, because the angle changes stiffness and speed.
