A Timken 34478RB tapered roller bearing cup: the outer race of a tapered roller bearing, 4-25/32 in outside diameter by 11/16 in wide, supplied with its snap ring. Cup only. The matching cone is the Timken 34300.
The 34478 base number identifies the cup half of the 34300/34478 tapered single pairing. A snap ring on the cup outside diameter locates the bearing axially in a through-bored housing.
The snap ring is what lets this cup be used in a housing bored straight through with no machined shoulder: the ring seats against the housing face and takes the axial reaction that a shoulder would otherwise provide. That removes a machining operation from the housing at the cost of a fixed axial position.

The cup is pressed into the housing bore on the cup face until the snap ring seats against the housing. Running clearance or preload is set against the mating cone on assembly.
