A Timken 16522 tapered roller bearing cup — the outer race on its own, 2-11/16 in outside diameter, 11/16 in width, from the Timken 16500 series. A tapered roller bearing is built from two separable parts: the cone, which is the inner ring with its roller and cage assembly, and the cup, which is the outer race the rollers run against. This listing is the cup.
16522 – Timken cup number in the 16500 series
Cup – outer race only; the rollers, cage and inner ring belong to the cone
No -90xxx suffix, so this is a single component rather than a complete assembly
Because cup and cone are separable, a tapered roller bearing is ordered, stocked and replaced as two part numbers, and they have to be a matched pair by design — the cup raceway angle and the roller angle are cut to work together. The cup determines the housing bore fit, the cone determines the shaft fit, and the shaft bore of the assembly comes from the cone, not the cup. That is why one cup can serve more than one cone: a 16522 works with a 16150 cone for a 1-1/2 in shaft and with a 16137 cone for a 1-3/8 in shaft. Selling the cup separately is normal practice, because a spalled cup is often replaced while the cone is still serviceable, or vice versa.
Component: cup (outer race)
Outside diameter: 2-11/16 in (2.6875 in / 68.263 mm)
Width: 11/16 in (0.6875 in / 17.462 mm)
Series: Timken 16500
Rows: 1
Rolling elements: tapered rollers (supplied with the cone)
Material: through-hardened bearing steel
Sold as 1 Pc. The cup only. The mating cone is not included, and no rollers, cage, spacer or seal is included. A complete bearing position requires a 16150 or 16137 cone in addition to this cup.
The cup presses into the housing bore and seats fully against its shoulder; a cup driver or a sleeve bearing on the cup face keeps the load off the raceway. The cone goes onto the shaft separately, and the pair is then set to the required end play or preload by adjusting the shaft nut or the shim pack, which is the step that determines bearing life in a tapered roller position. Cup and cone faces are kept free of nicks, since a raised burr on a seating face tilts the race.
The direct equivalent is a 16522 cup from another maker built to the same Timken-standard envelope: NSK 16522, Bower 16522, Koyo 16522, NTN 16522, SKF 16522. The cup pairs with a 16150 or 16137 cone; a cone from a different series will not match the raceway angle even if the outside dimensions look close, so cone numbers outside this pairing are not substitutes. A cup marked 16522B or a double cup with a D suffix is a different part.
