Cone and cup raceways are ground as a matched pair, so the roller path, taper and setting behaviour are held between the two halves. A tapered roller bearing takes heavy radial load together with thrust in one direction, which is why these run in opposed pairs on wheel ends, gearbox shafts and pinion positions. Case-carburized steel gives a hard running surface over a tough core, which absorbs shock loading better than a through-hardened ring. The effective centre location and backing diameters are the figures used to set bearing spacing and shoulder heights on the shaft and in the housing.
