Product Description

What this part is

A Reliance Electric GP-2000 AC V*S (variable speed) adjustable-frequency drive — the workhorse general-purpose inverter Reliance sold through the 1990s for fans, pumps, conveyors and general machine duty. It is a PWM inverter with a microprocessor-based regulator, sized here for a 7.5 HP, 460 V, three-phase motor. Rating is stated by the drive’s own output current, not by whatever motor happens to be bolted to the machine it came out of.

Decoding the order code

2G — the GP-2000 (General Purpose 2000) drive family.U — standard North American build.4 — 460 V voltage class. A 2 in this position is the 230 V class; a 460 V class drive must not be put on a 230 V supply or vice versa.1 — enclosure/configuration digit for the standard NEMA Type 1 build.007 — the horsepower rating index within the class. Adjacent members of the family read 002 (2 HP), 005 (5 HP) and 007 (7.5 HP), so a 2GU41005 and this 2GU41007 differ by one rating step and are not interchangeable without resizing the motor overload settings.

Published ratings

Motor rating: 7.5 HPInput: three-phase 460 V AC, 50/60 Hz; maximum input current approximately 13.4 AOutput: three-phase 460 V, 11.1 A maximum continuousOutput apparent power: 460 V x 11.1 A x √3 = approximately 8.8 kVA. Published figures around 10.7 kVA for this model refer to the input/transformer sizing basis rather than the motor-side output — both numbers describe the same drive, which is why you will see either quoted.Control method: PWM volts-per-hertz with a microprocessor-based regulator and slip compensation. This is not a vector drive — there is no sensorless vector mode, no encoder feedback and no closed-loop flux vector control on the GP-2000 platform.Motor protection: electronic motor overload meeting UL/CSA and NEC/CEC requirements, so a separate thermal overload block is generally not required by code for the single motor it protectsEnclosure: NEMA Type 1 — indoor, drip-shield, ventilated. No washdown, no dust-tight and no outdoor rating.Approvals: UL / CSA listed industrial control equipmentManufacturer status: obsolete and long out of production

What these specs mean in practice

Because this is a volts-per-hertz drive, it will run a standard induction motor smoothly across a broad speed range but it holds no shaft position, produces limited torque at very low speed, and cannot do the tight speed regulation a vector drive manages. That is exactly right for a centrifugal fan or pump, where the load torque falls with speed, and it is why so many of these are still in service on air handlers, cooling towers and process pumps. It is the wrong choice for a hoist, a positioning axis, or a constant-torque machine that must hold full torque near zero speed.

Size against the 11.1 A output rather than the horsepower badge. A 7.5 HP 460 V motor is nominally 11 A full load, so the margin here is thin by design; an older motor with a higher nameplate FLA leaves nothing for starting or for a fouled load. Check the motor nameplate before ordering.

Input current of roughly 13.4 A sets the branch-circuit and protective-device sizing on the supply side. Verify the available short-circuit current at the drive terminals against the nameplate SCCR before installing in a new panel.

Braking: what you still need:
An overhauling or high-inertia load needs somewhere to dump regenerated energy. The GP-2000 relies on an external dynamic-braking package (chopper module and resistor) for that. No braking resistor and no dynamic braking module are included with this drive. Without them, fast decelerations will trip the drive on bus overvoltage — extend the decel ramp instead.

What is in the box

The drive only, as photographed. Not included: motor, line reactor, output reactor, EMC/RFI filter, dynamic braking resistor or module, remote operator station or remote keypad kit, communication option board, spare regulator or gate-driver boards, conduit box, mounting hardware, and manual. Parameters will be whatever the last machine left in them; plan on an initialisation and a fresh motor setup rather than a drop-in swap.

Installation and setup notes

Mount vertically with the specified clearance above and below for the ventilation path; the GP-2000 relies on convection and fan flow through the heatsink channel and will trip on overtemperature if crowded. Set the motor nameplate voltage, current and base frequency parameters before the first run, and set the electronic overload to the motor’s actual FLA rather than leaving it at the drive rating — that is the single most commonly missed step on these. Do not switch a contactor in the output between drive and motor while running. Allow the DC bus to discharge fully before opening the unit.

Interchange guidance

Reliance Electric drives passed to Rockwell Automation, and the GP-2000 has no like-for-like current replacement. The nearest modern equivalents are a 460 V 7.5 HP Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 or PowerFlex 753, which will do the job electrically but have completely different dimensions, terminal layouts and parameter schemes — a retrofit, not a swap. Where the panel wiring, control scheme and enclosure cutout already suit a GP-2000, a same-model used or new-old-stock drive is the faster and cheaper fix, which is what this is. Related sizes in the same family and voltage class include 2GU41002, 2GU41003, 2GU41005 and 2GU41010; these are different ratings, not cross-references.
