An RHP N217 P5 single-row cylindrical roller bearing, 85 mm bore x 150 mm outside diameter x 28 mm wide, straight bore, built to P5 precision. One row of cylindrical rollers carries 120 kN dynamic and 140 kN static radial load in a 32.5 mm cross-section. The N design puts both ribs on the inner ring and leaves the outer ring plain, which makes this a non-locating bearing for the floating position in a shaft arrangement.
N — single row with two ribs on the inner ring and a plain, ribless outer ring. The outer ring separates from the inner ring, roller and cage assembly.

Axial location and the N, NU, NJ and NUP designs:
Rib arrangement is the specification a cylindrical roller bearing is selected on, and the four common designs behave differently:
N — two inner-ring ribs, plain outer ring. Non-locating: the rollers run axially along the outer raceway, so the shaft is free to move axially through the bearing. This bearing.
NU — two outer-ring ribs, plain inner ring. Also non-locating, with the rollers running along the inner raceway instead.
NJ — one inner-ring rib. Locates the shaft in one direction.
NUP — two inner-ring ribs, one a loose flange ring. Locates the shaft in both directions.
An N217 and an NU217 share the same 85 x 150 x 28 mm envelope and both accommodate axial displacement, but the ribs sit on opposite rings, so the separable half and the direction of assembly differ. An NJ217 or NUP217 in this position adds axial constraint the arrangement was not designed for.
Line contact between roller and raceway is what buys the load capacity: a cylindrical roller spreads its load along a line rather than a point, giving several times the radial rating of a ball bearing in the same envelope, at the cost of a lower speed ceiling and no meaningful thrust capacity. P5 precision tightens bore, outside diameter and running accuracy well beyond the normal class, which is what suits this bearing to machine-tool and instrument spindles where radial runout carries straight through to the workpiece.
Because the outer ring is plain, axial float in this position is set by how the outer ring is clamped, and the shaft’s thermal growth is taken up inside the bearing rather than being forced into the housing.

Sold as 1 Pc — one complete bearing: the plain outer ring, and the twin-ribbed inner ring carrying the roller and cage assembly. The two halves are a matched set.
The inner ring goes on with an interference fit, heated or pressed square to the shaft shoulder, and the plain outer ring seats in the housing bore to the fit the drawing calls for. Because the halves separate, they mount independently and the outer ring is introduced over the roller set afterwards. Each ring is marked, and the roller assembly returns to its original outer ring. On a P5 bearing the shaft and housing seats carry the accuracy: seat geometry and squareness are what the precision class is bought for.
Same-specification equivalents at 85 x 150 x 28 mm with the N rib arrangement: SKF N 217 ECP and N 217 ECM, NSK N217M and N217W, NTN N217, Nachi N217, FAG N217-E-XL-TVP2. A P5-class equivalent is the match for this unit’s precision. Related sizes, not substitutes: NU217, NJ217 and NUP217 share this envelope and radial rating but carry their ribs differently and behave differently axially; N217E and N217ECP are uprated internal designs with higher load ratings; a normal-precision N217 holds a different accuracy class from this P5 bearing.
