Product Description

What this part is

The controller computer out of a Hommel-Etamic surface roughness and contour measuring system – Jenoptik part number 10032865-LS. This is the industrial PC that runs the measuring station: it drives the axes, digitises the tactile probe signal and hosts the measuring and evaluation software. It is not a general-purpose PC and it is not a stand-alone measuring instrument; it is the electronics half of a two-part metrology system whose other half is the mechanical measuring station and probe.

Hommel-Etamic (formerly Hommelwerke) is the Industrial Metrology division of the Jenoptik Group. Systems in this family carry the names T8000, C8000, nanoscan, surfscan, waveline, waveslide, wavemove and Evovis (the evaluation software) – all searchable as either Hommel-Etamic or Jenoptik. A controller of this vintage belongs to the T8000 / C8000 generation of PC-based tactile roughness and contour stations.

The four numbers on this assembly

10032865-LS – Hommel-Etamic / Jenoptik assembly number for the controller PC. This is the number a Jenoptik service engineer will quote.ROCKY-4786EVG-RS-R41 – the IEI Technology single-board computer fitted.PCI-19S-RS-R40 – the IEI 19-slot passive backplane the SBC plugs into.Doli 1250A BS – a DOLI-branded card in the backplane. All four belong on the record. The IEI and DOLI numbers are what let you verify the configuration and source board-level spares independently of Jenoptik, which is the whole commercial argument for buying this assembly on the surplus market rather than as a Jenoptik service part.

Why it is built this way – PICMG 1.0 and a 19-slot passive backplane:
Metrology OEMs did not use desktop motherboards. The architecture here is a passive backplane plus a CPU card on a card edge: all the intelligence lives on one full-size PICMG 1.0 single-board computer that plugs into a backplane carrying nineteen slots of PCI and ISA. Two things follow, and both are the reason this hardware still has value. First, the ISA slots: proprietary metrology interface, probe amplifier and axis cards from this era are ISA, and no modern motherboard has an ISA bus. Second, the CPU card is field-replaceable without touching the instrument cards – if the SBC dies you swap one board and the machine’s calibration-bearing interface cards stay put. Nineteen slots is a large backplane by any standard; it exists so a fully optioned measuring station with multiple axis and probe cards fits in one chassis.

IEI ROCKY-4786EVG-RS-R41 – harvested from IEI’s own documentation:
Full-size PICMG 1.0 CPU card, RoHS compliant, from IEI’s long-term-support range. Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott) and Celeron D processors with a 400, 533 or 800 MHz front-side bus. Chipset Intel 865G / 865GV northbridge with ICH5 southbridge, Winbond W83627F/HF Super I/O, Award Flash BIOS. Graphics is the Intel Extreme Graphics II engine integrated in the northbridge (AGP 4X/8X bus internally), one VGA port. Memory is two 184-pin DDR 333/400 MHz SDRAM DIMM sockets, 1 GB per module maximum, 2 GB system maximum.

Networking is the reason the EVG suffix exists: two Ethernet ports, an Intel 82562ET 10/100 Mbps controller plus an Intel 82547 Gigabit controller attached over Intel’s CSA (Communication Streaming Architecture) bus rather than the PCI bus, with ASF 2.0 remote-control support. The CSA attachment matters on a measuring station – the gigabit port does not compete with the instrument cards for PCI bandwidth, which is exactly what you want when a probe card is streaming data.

I/O: 2 x RS-232 (pin header), 1 x LPT with SPP/EPP/ECP, 1 x IrDA, 8 x USB 2.0 (pin headers), 2 x Serial-ATA 150, 2 x IDE ATA-100 (40-pin, 2.54 mm pitch) supporting four Ultra ATA 100/66/33 devices, 1 x floppy (34-pin), 1 x PS/2 keyboard and mouse plus a 5-pin keyboard header, one CompactFlash Type II socket for solid-state boot media, Realtek ALC655 AC’97 codec audio. PCI bus interface 33 MHz revision 2.3. Software-programmable watchdog timer, 1 to 255 second system reset. Hardware monitoring of CPU Vcore, supply rails, CPU and system fan speed and temperature. Real-time clock with 256-byte battery-backed CMOS RAM. ACPI 2.0 power management.

Board dimensions 338 x 122 mm, weight 1.1 kg gross. AT/ATX power support. Power consumption 12 V at 7.52 A, -12 V at 500 mA, 5 V at 6.98 A running a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 on an 800 MHz FSB with 512 MB of DDR400. Operating temperature 0 to 60 degrees C (32 to 140 degrees F), operating humidity 5 to 95 percent non-condensing. IEI documents the board as ROCKY-4786EV / EVG user manual rev. 4.10.

One genuine inconsistency inside IEI’s own literature, flagged rather than resolved: the rev 4.10 user manual describes the memory as single-channel DDR and the northbridge as 865G, while the RS-R40/R41 datasheets describe dual-channel DDR 333/400 and quote 865GV for the display. Both statements are IEI’s. Treat the memory channel configuration as something to verify from the installed DIMMs rather than assumed.

The DOLI card

DOLI Elektronik GmbH (Munich) builds digital measurement and control electronics – their EDC / EDCi controller family handles closed-loop position and force control, incremental and SSI encoder inputs, and plus/minus 10 V drive outputs for materials-testing and precision-motion systems. A DOLI card in a metrology station backplane is doing that class of work: axis control and transducer signal conditioning. However, DOLI does not publish a datasheet for a card designated 1250A BS, and no published DOLI catalogue entry corresponds to that marking. The number is reproduced here exactly as it appears on the unit. Its precise function, revision and interface are not confirmed from a manufacturer source and no specification has been invented for it. If the card’s function is critical to your application, verify it from the card itself before purchase.

What the parent measuring system does

Useful context for anyone matching this controller to a machine: Hommel-Etamic PC-based roughness stations of this generation offer measuring ranges and resolutions of plus/minus 8 micrometres at 1 nm, plus/minus 80 micrometres at 10 nm, plus/minus 800 micrometres at 100 nm and plus/minus 8000 micrometres at 1000 nm, with micrometre or microinch display. Filtering covers DIN 4768 RC, ISO 11562 Gaussian, ISO 13565-1 two-fold Gaussian for Rk parameters and ISO/TS 16610-31 robust Gaussian, with cut-offs of 0.025, 0.08, 0.25, 0.8, 2.5 and 8 mm. Traverse lengths run to 120 or 200 mm depending on the traverse unit; traverse speeds 0.05, 0.15 and 0.5 mm/s or variable from 0.01 to 2 mm/s. Parameter sets include ISO 4287 roughness, profile and waviness parameters, ISO 13565-1 to -3 Rk parameters, ISO 12085 motif parameters and JIS B-0601. Station power supply is 100-240 V AC 50/60 Hz with an operating temperature of +10 to +40 degrees C (+18 to +25 degrees C on nanoscan). Those are system-level figures from Jenoptik literature for the T8000 / C8000 family – they describe what the controller was built to serve, not a specification of this chassis.

What is and is not included – read this before buying:
This listing is the controller PC assembly as pictured, sold open box, quantity one. The unit’s own condition note reads: See Pictures For Unit Modules – the photographs are the definitive statement of what is physically present, and they should be reviewed before purchase.

Not included, and not implied by any of the part numbers above: the measuring station itself (granite plate, measuring column, traverse unit, tilting device), any probe system or probe arms, calibration standards, the Evovis or T8000 measuring and evaluation software licence or dongle, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Jenoptik cabling to the station.

Not established from any manufacturer source and therefore not stated as fact: the CPU actually fitted to the SBC, the quantity and size of DDR installed, the presence or capacity of any hard disk or CompactFlash card, the operating system and whether it is licensed, whether the measuring software is present, and the complete list of cards populating the nineteen backplane slots. These are exactly the items that determine whether the unit is a drop-in replacement or a rebuild base, and no assumption has been made about any of them. Verify against the photographs and confirm with the seller.

Fitting, commissioning and interchange notes

Practical points for a service engineer. Socket 478 CPUs, DDR DIMMs, PATA drives and PICMG 1.0 CPU cards are all long out of production but abundant in the surplus channel, so board-level repair of this platform remains genuinely viable – which is more than can be said for the Jenoptik assembly as a whole. The CompactFlash Type II socket is the sensible route to a solid-state boot device on a machine that has been running from a two-decade-old mechanical disk. The watchdog timer and hardware monitoring are on-board and worth enabling on an unattended measuring station. If you replace the SBC, note that ROCKY-4786EV (no G) has only the 10/100 controller and ROCKY-4786E2V has dual 10/100 – neither gives you the gigabit CSA port, so only the EVG variant is a like-for-like swap. Within the EVG line, RS-R40 and RS-R41 differ by revision level rather than function.

Critically: because the metrology interface cards carry the system’s calibration relationship, swapping the whole controller between machines is not a neutral act. Expect to recalibrate against a roughness standard after any controller change, and keep the original card set with its original station where possible.

Brand and obsolescence trail

Hommelwerke became Hommel-Etamic, which is the Jenoptik Industrial Metrology division; current-generation equivalents are the Jenoptik waveline W800 / W900 platforms with Evovis software. Search the same hardware as Hommel-Etamic, Hommel Etamic, Jenoptik Hommel, Jenoptik Industrial Metrology or Hommelwerke. IEI Technology also trades as ICP America and iEi Integration. DOLI Elektronik GmbH remains in business building EDCi controllers. There is no drop-in modern replacement for the 10032865-LS assembly – Jenoptik’s current controllers are a different architecture entirely, which is precisely why an original controller is worth keeping a working T8000-generation station alive.
