A Timken 451250 tapered roller bearing cup — the outer race of a large-bore tapered roller bearing, 12-1/2 in outside diameter and 2-7/16 in wide. The cup is a single hardened and ground steel ring carrying the outer raceway.
1 Pc. Cup only.
A tapered roller bearing is built in two halves that are stocked and replaced separately, because the cup presses into the housing while the cone carries the rollers and goes onto the shaft. The cup holds the outer raceway and nothing else. At 12-1/2 in outside diameter and 2-7/16 in wide this is heavy industrial section — the range used in rolling mill chocks, large gearbox and pinion stands, crane and mining sheaves, and press and kiln shafting, where the bearing is designed for very high radial load with substantial thrust taken through the raceway angle.
Cup and cone raceways are matched at manufacture and the two halves are ordered as a pair by number. A cup of this size is set on assembly by adjusting the axial position of one race against the other, which fixes the running clearance or preload.
The cup presses squarely into the housing bore and seats fully against its shoulder, with force applied to the back face rather than the raceway. A section this heavy is normally installed with a press or with controlled housing heating rather than by driving, and the housing bore is checked for roundness before the cup goes in, since a large thin cup takes up the form of the bore it sits in.
451250 is the Timken cup number and identifies the outside diameter, width and raceway angle together. Because the raceway angle is part of the number, a cup of the same outside diameter and width from a different number is a related size rather than a substitution: the cone will not seat correctly against a raceway ground to a different angle.
