Product Description

What this part is

A Timken 42368 tapered roller bearing cone — the inner ring complete with its roller set and cage — from the 42368/42584 single–row tapered roller bearing, supplied in Timken Class 3 precision. Bore 3.6875 in (93.663 mm), inner ring width 1.1406 in (28.971 mm). Sold as 1 Pc.

Quantity and configuration

One cone per order — 1 Pc. This is the cone only. No cup is included. A tapered roller bearing is a two–piece bearing: the cone carries the rollers, and the cup is the separate outer race they run on. The cup for this cone is the 42584, giving an assembled bearing of 3.6875 in bore x 5.8437 in outside diameter x 1.125 in overall width, with a cup width of 0.8438 in. Timken also catalogues the 42585 as a mating cup for this cone. Without a cup, the cone cannot run.

Decoding the designation

42368 — the industry–standard cone number for this size. The digits are common across brands.
−3, marked on the ring as *3 — the Timken tolerance class. Timken taper cones run in classes 4 (standard), 2, 3, 0 and 00 in ascending order of precision, so a Class 3 cone is held to tighter bore, width and runout tolerances than a standard part. It drops straight into a standard position and gives better shaft location and quieter running there.
42584 / 42585 — the mating cup numbers. Cone and cup numbers pair by roller and raceway geometry, which is why they are always quoted together.

What these specs mean in practice

A tapered roller bearing takes heavy radial load and heavy thrust in one direction at the same time, because rollers and raceways all converge on a common apex. That is why they are mounted in opposed pairs — each takes thrust one way, and together they locate the shaft and let you dial in endplay or preload with the adjusting nut.

The K factor of 1.19 is the ratio Timken uses to split a given load into its radial and thrust components for this geometry. A lower K means a steeper cup angle and more thrust capacity for the same radial load; at 1.19 this is a general–purpose taper, comfortable in mixed radial and thrust duty rather than a thrust specialist.

Class 3 precision is worth having where shaft position matters — gear meshes, pinion settings, machine spindles — because tighter bore and runout tolerance means less of the setting is guesswork. It costs nothing in fit: the mounting dimensions are the same as a standard cone.

Fitting notes

Press the cone onto the shaft against its backface, never through the rollers. Respect the shaft backing shoulder diameters above — a shoulder that is too small will not support the ring face, and one that is too large will foul the cage. Keep the shaft fillet inside 0.12 in radius or the cone will not seat.

Press the cup squarely to its housing shoulder; a cocked cup is the single most common reason a rebuilt taper bearing runs hot. Then seat the rollers by rotating the shaft under a light load before you take the final endplay or preload reading, because unseated rollers read as clearance that is not really there. Work to the machine builder’s setting spec.

Interchange guidance

42368 is an industry–standard cone number, so Timken 42368, Bower/BCA 42368, Koyo 42368 and NTN 4T–42368 are the same cone on the same envelope, and all mate with a 42584 cup. The plain 42368 without a class suffix is the standard–precision version — a related build on the same envelope, dimensionally interchangeable but held to looser tolerances than this Class 3 part. Do not pair this cone with a cup from a different number family; the pairing is what sets the contact geometry, and near–identical diameters are not enough.
