A tapered roller bearing has no internal clearance until it is mounted, so the end play or preload is set after the cup is fully seated in its housing.
3490 is a dimensionally standardised imperial cone, so FAG 3490, Timken 3490, Koyo 3490, NTN 4T-3490, Bower/BCA 3490 and Federal-Mogul 3490 interchange with one another and with any maker’s 3420, 3422 or 3426 cup. 3491 and 3492 are related sizes, not equivalents.
