What this part is

A double-row spherical roller bearing on the ISO 22211 envelope — 55 mm bore, 100 mm outside diameter, 25 mm width — with a 1:12 tapered bore and the W33 lubrication feature. Two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run against a single spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring, rollers and cage swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That is what makes the bearing self-aligning: it accepts static misalignment from housing bores machined out of line, and dynamic misalignment from a shaft that bows under load, without pinching the roller ends.

Decoding the designation

222 – ISO dimension series 222, the wider, higher-capacity of the two common spherical roller series.
11 – bore code; 11 × 5 = 55 mm bore.
K – tapered bore, 1:12 taper. Not interchangeable with the straight-bore 22211.
W33 – lubrication groove machined around the outer ring with three radial oil holes through it, so grease or oil is fed straight to the rollers.
F4 – Torrington’s legacy internal-clearance mark from the F1–F5 family. It predates the C0/C2/C3/C4 codes Torrington later adopted and is not the same code as C4.
55SD22 – Torrington’s older ABMA-style number for the identical bearing: 55 mm bore, SD = two-row self-aligning spherical roller, dimension series 22. 55SD22 and 22211 are the same part in two numbering eras.

What these specs mean in practice

The tapered bore is the reason to choose this variant. Driving the inner ring up a tapered seat sets the interference fit and the running clearance in one operation, which lets you mount on a plain shaft with an adapter sleeve instead of machining a precision cylindrical seat, and lets you re-set clearance at every rebuild. The trade is that mounting is a measured job, not a press-and-go: drive the ring too far and you close the internal clearance to zero and cook the bearing.

W33 matters on any bearing you intend to relubricate in service. Without it, fresh grease entering the housing has to find its way past the outer ring; with the groove and three holes, it is delivered between the two roller rows and pushes old grease outward. If the housing has a grease port, W33 is what makes that port useful.

Quantity and configuration

Sold as 1 Pc — one complete double-row spherical roller bearing: outer ring, inner ring, two rows of rollers and their cages, assembled. It is a self-contained unit, not a component of a set. Open on both faces, no seals and no shields.

The adapter sleeve is a separate item and is not included.

Fitting notes

To mount on a plain 50 mm shaft, use an H311 adapter sleeve with its lock nut and lock washer; the sleeve’s tapered outside diameter matches the bearing’s 55 mm 1:12 bore. Alternatively the bearing sits directly on a shaft seat cut to a 1:12 taper.

Set the drive-up by measuring residual radial internal clearance with a feeler gauge across the unloaded roller row, or by measuring axial drive-up distance, before and after. Respect the abutment diameters above so the ring faces are supported and the seal or shoulder does not foul the outer ring corner. Do not press on the outer ring to seat the inner ring, and never drive the assembly through the rollers.

Because both rings and rollers are one assembly, the outer ring can be fitted to the housing before the inner ring is drawn up the sleeve, which is usually the easier sequence in a split pillow block.

Interchange guidance

Torrington bearings were absorbed into Timken; the current Timken part on this envelope is 22211EJW33 (tapered bore 22211KEJW33). Genuine tapered-bore, open, W33 interchanges include SKF 22211 EK/W33, FAG 22211-E1-K-W33, NSK 22211EAKE4, NTN 22211EAKD1, Koyo 22211RHKW33, Consolidated 22211 K W33, Link-Belt 22211LBKW33, Rollway 22211KW33 and Browning 22211CKW33. Legacy Torrington 55SD22K is the same bearing.

One caution on substitution: the straight-bore 22211W33 shares the same 55 × 100 × 25 envelope but is a related size, not an equivalent — it cannot be mounted on an adapter sleeve, and a tapered-bore bearing cannot be pressed onto a cylindrical seat. Match the bore form, not just the outside dimensions.
