What these specs mean in practice

A triplex set solves a problem a pair cannot. Three bearings are normally arranged two in tandem against one, so the two sharing the same direction roughly double the thrust capacity and axial stiffness on that side while the third handles thrust the other way and keeps the set located. That suits a spindle with a strongly one-directional cutting thrust, or a vertical spindle carrying its own weight. The cost is width, heat and complexity: three rows generate more friction than two, and the whole stack clamps as a unit.

The 15° contact angle keeps the set fast. A shallower angle holds the ball load line closer to radial, reducing ball spin, gyroscopic moment and cage load, so the bearing runs cooler and higher than a 25° equivalent. It trades away axial stiffness per row, which is why a triplex arrangement is a sensible way to recover thrust capacity without a steeper, slower angle.

Medium preload is the middle of the three classes. It gives more axial stiffness and better load sharing between rows than light preload, with less friction, heat and grease consumption than heavy. On a three-row set that balance matters more than usual, because friction losses are already multiplied by the extra row. Preload class is part of the spindle design: a TUL or TUH set changes both the stiffness the machine relies on and its thermal behaviour.

The phenolic outer-land-riding cage is the high-speed enabler. Phenolic is light and mildly self-lubricating, so it generates far less heat than steel, and riding on the outer ring land lets centrifugal force stabilise the cage rather than load it. Phenolic is attacked by some solvents.

Fitting notes

Universally ground faces allow assembly in the arrangement the machine calls for without shims. A matching substitute carries a 15° contact angle, ISO P4S, a phenolic cage, medium preload and the triplex arrangement together.
